Best 6550's for ARC VT-100 MK3 amp- SED; Tungsol??
My amp is a VTL, not an ARC. I tried the new Tung-Sol 6550 and didn't care for it in this amp (same story with the SED KT88). I like both the SED 6550C and the Electro-Harmonix KT88 better than the others I tried. The latter is my own long-term ch...

"The issue is whether there is a way to do this without losing a lot of money"The alternative being, I take it, losing only a little money ;^)
Mccormack DNA125 or Belles 150A Hot Rod
Well now you've done it Phd -- gone and made me embarrassed for being a wise-ass :-)
Many reviewers will lead you down the wrong path.
Kal: No argument here, just that the idea of missing what you don't know isn't there struck me funny.Personally, I'd have thought that by now, especially given the existence of Audiogon, there might have started up an advertising-free, subscriptio...
Mccormack DNA125 or Belles 150A Hot Rod
Phd: Clicking on a username provides a link to send email... ;^)

Kal:"I'd be more concerned with those who do not preface their comparisons with a disclaimer"And I'd be inclined to agree with you -- except that, in many instances, how could a reader (or an editor for that matter) even tell when a disclaimer was...
Mccormack DNA125 or Belles 150A Hot Rod
David, Steve and Audphile1: Nice to receive your seconds for my mini-review, and credit to Steve for being understanding about my concision regarding some contextual implications :-)
Where to buy MDF board?
Not that I think Achetype racks are all that stable either (nor, ulitmately, is the Synergy Twin which I own, compared with a truly stable non-adjustable rack like a Billy Bags or similar), but George's home-brew experience was undoubtedly further...
Mccormack DNA125 or Belles 150A Hot Rod
I don't know what your speakers or room sound like, or how your musical tastes run, and I can't tell you anything about the Belles. My experience owning a DNA-125 has been very positive, though it's primarily been a back-up amp for me (driving Thi...
If you have a "kick booty" DAC, does the transport
Does the transport really matter? In my experience, yes, at least as much as the DAC itself. Even with a jitter-reduction box in between, and a balanced connection, and extensive power conditioning all around. And my admittedly limited experience ...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
RFS, obviously you 'get it' about the Lips, and might enjoy checking out the thread I mentioned, and I'd be glad if you felt moved to contribute, it's been dormant for a while now. I've been waiting for AWWTM to sink in for a while longer before I...
short cable length: does cable "quality" matter?
Porziob: Are your oft-repeated sentiments about DBT prompted by having participated in many yourself? Just curious whether it's experience or not that makes you convinced cables can never pass a blind test. Personally I've never done a blind cable...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
RFS: That sounds like a playlist I'd make, except I'm missing a couple of those titles (but not artists). What do you think of the new Lips? I once authored an archived thread devoted to them, but I'm mostly underwhelmed by AWWTM although I do lik...
Driving Thiels
I kind of hate to post this, though it's nothing I haven't said elsewhere. My friend Unsound and I have had this divergence of opinion before (as he knows :-) I believe he is a fan of sealed-box bass, and if you are, all Thiels past the 3.5 could ...
12AT7 tubes
Easytune: You wrote that you need to replace "one tube" in the phonostage. Do you mean by that literally a single tube? I mention this only because most phonostage circuits use L/R pairs of matched tubes, and you wouldn't replace one without repla...
