Can tube preamps be as 'detailed' sounding as ss?
Thanks Atmasphere. I can well believe that it's a murky business trying to discern volume differences using pure sine waves, and also that incipient high-order distortion can cause listener fatigue. But I always regard at arm's length claims which...

Onhwy61 sez:"What's with all you people recommending live music? Are you on drugs? Live music doesn't have the soundstage depth, the layering, the upper octave sweetness, nor the outside the speaker imaging that even a not the BEST, but decent sys...

Yeah, my comment was supposed to be a smart-alecky wisecrack -- then I actually read the review in question and realized that's exactly what was done...
Analog vs. CDP: A fair comparison?
Eldee: I take it you mean "never been to nirvana"...I know you've been an owner of turntables and records!
Can tube preamps be as 'detailed' sounding as ss?
Admission: I didn't, and still don't, know what the acronym 'IOW' means...About the amp thing, I play electric guitar, which as you know is often intentionally distorted, either via amp overdrive or by a fuzzbox, and think I'd have a pretty good s...

You want answers?I think I'm entitled to them. You want answers?I want THE BEST!You can't handle THE BEST! Son, we live in a world that has RECORDS. And those RECORDS have to be guarded by men with TURNTABLES. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. ONHWY...

Well, Cary makes that CDP with both tube and SS output stages that you can switch between. You could have a real fun time pairing that front end with this preamp.

Onhwy61: How about we make a deal that when you've "reached the summit of bestiality", we'll just take your word for it and you won't post the pictures on your system thread...Thanks, you're the BEST!P.S. -- Douglas, I think a short nap might be i...

Boa2: Either Onhwy61 is practicing Law #3, or else he's practicing Laws #6, 25, 28, 32, 34, 37 and 40 while breaking Laws #4, 36, 45 and 46. All the same, I don't trust him and am taking appropriate proactive defensive measures, which I'm not tell...
Review: Spread Spectrum Technologies Trinaural Processor Surround Pre
Eldartford, just curious, what are the distances between the L/R mains and to your chair (and is your center recessed to maintain equal distance)? And how are the 3 subs positioned?
Any Audiophile recording of The Planets?
I should mention that I have two pressings of the Boult/Vienna, which don't sound equivalent. Both are black labels, but on the one I prefer has "Westminster" in an ellipse above "Stereo" within a blue bar and "Subsidiary of Am-Par Record Co." at ...
Analog vs. CDP: A fair comparison?
Back-handed. I have nothing against my left-handed brothers :-)
Any Audiophile recording of The Planets?
I'm not knowledgeable enough about classical to have my opinion taken as anything more than that, but I'll throw in here that my favorite among the versions I own, for both sound and performance, is Boult with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra and ...
Can a component after complete breaking reverse ?
Terryakhan: The relevant answer to your question is that you can get responses ranging from Porziob's to most everyone else's (and then there's the question of what constitutes break-in vs. warm-up), but the bottom line is if one can't determine t...
Review: Rega Planar 3 Turntable
Enjoyed learning about these Ferrari, even if I don't and never have owned a Rega. I always wonder though, what exactly are the mechanisms by which differently-configured counterweights of roughly similar mass are supposed to make noteworthy audib...
