Time, Wear, and Technological Evolution
@OP, then a smaller speaker might be the solution. The LS 50s port is tuned to 50Hz, which might not be ideal, but its in room response does fall off quite a bit from 40 to 100Hz. You could also try a non ported speaker like the ProAc Tablette 10,...
Time, Wear, and Technological Evolution
@OP Regarding your query about the longevity of the speakers, generally if the speakers have no audible defects then they could work happily for a good number of years. One caveat, I don't know the particular model of speaker but around that time ...
**Advice Needed**Damage To Imported Speakers**
Disputes relating to damaged goods following shipping are generally with the shipper and not the supplier.unless there is fairly categoric proof that the goods were damaged before shipping or (possibly) that the supplier was negligent in how the g...
Seeking Legit Cartridge Expert?
@OP As you have an ML in your system, you should listen to a Umami Blue - sounds great on everything but it is a big sounding cartridge with great dynamics so very well suited to rock.
Would you buy a pair of speakers by just looking at the measured freq. response?
Actually, speakers are the audio component where there is the best correlation between measurements and sound. However, I would never buy a speaker based on measurements, because, while they tell you a fair amount, they don't tell you enough.
Vinyl Records - Shipping, max/min temperatures
There is still some insulation value in the cardboard boxes and truck they are shipped in is probably not going to be much colder than an industrial warehouse, where, I am sure there are lots of new vinyl records stored for distribution.
Using PA Speakers In A Home "Audiophile" Application!
@benanders. You touch on an important point, but particularly with regard to electric music. The use of compression in recording limits dynamic range relative to what you'd hear from a live band. In addition, not always, but a lot of the time, the...

Using PA Speakers In A Home "Audiophile" Application!
@OP, just coming back regarding the Yamaha speaker you posted. While the specs mention "full range", that speaker is actually for what back in my live sound days, we would call a 'vocal PA' i.e. really designed for sound reinforcement of vocals, g...
Good measuring DACs vs.
DAC measurements are the least reliable of all, especially since they tend to concentrate in the D rather than the A side of the DAC. As per Erik Squires, most modern DAC chips measure excellently in terms of their linearity, so most of the curren...
Using PA Speakers In A Home "Audiophile" Application!
@OP - the Toddalin clip gives a fair impression of what PA speakers sound like reproducing music - and that's a pair of fairly high quality speakers. Each to their own, but PA speakers are built primarily for generating high spls without blowing u...
15 in full range drivers
Every example limps as the saying goes. But anyway, below is Paul Miller's measurements of the Lowther Almira which uses an eight inch DX3 driver supplemented by a supertweeter. I've never hear a "full range" driver which uses a whizzer cone to ex...
Speaker Spikes - Working Principle
@OP Carpet and underlay will not act a mass-spring-damper system. Locating the bottom of the cabinet in free space will not "change" the sound of the majority of speakers since they are designed to be set up in that way.
Vibration Question
@OP You don't necessarily want to be coupling your tonearm mount to a large vibrating surface like the oak cabinet. There is mass in your arm pedestals but no damping. The only real benefit from the proposed arrangement is not having the arm on a ...
Speaker Spikes - Working Principle
@tcotruvo Yes! I mentioned this as a case study because there can be a mistaken assumption that just because something is very heavy, it won't move around. However, at the risk of provoking the ire of the OP, the spikes not only stop reactive move...
