Would you buy speakers with out first listening ?
Yes, my current speakers were bought without prior listening. But for $150 for Altec 604-8G's in 620 factory cabs, I couldn't pay for them and get them loaded fast enough. Church yardsale. Although if I was going to spend serious money on speakers...
Animated Egg...
I have a copy of that Lp and have listened to it a few times. I am always excited when I find some 60-70's obscure rock. Some of it is very good, and Animated Egg is a good one. Can't really give you a whole lot more info without doing the search ...
Expectations low, listening pleasure high.
I think that what you describe is fairly common in our hobby. I occasionally find myself trying to do the same thing, but usually catch myself and just get into the music. The truth of the matter is that we are all blessed with better sound qualit...
Do any of you fear dismantling your setups?
I don't fear it, I am just lazy. I have been playing with speaker placement today though. I had changed nothing for several months, but today got a hair to move the speakers a little. Undecided if the difference is an improvement or decline, so I ...

A decent preamp for Altec 604 speakers
I have identical Altecs. I tried a few SS (vintage) amps with them and found them all fatiguing and shrill in the topend and settled on tubes (McIntosh MC40's). Now, I can and do listen for hours without fatigue. From my search, I don't know that ...
