It was 20 years ago today. . What was your system?
I auditioned an Acurus preamp in that system and it was MUCH better than my particular Adcom although I couldn't afford the Acurus at that time...you live and learn.
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Note that most musicians are surprisingly clueless about sound mixing regardless of their talent as musicians. The good news is there are zillions of great sounding recordings to enjoy, and some are new...Also you really can't "train" engineers to...
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
No clue...sorry...and I only discovered the Pearl when complaining to a hifi dealer about the high frequency exaggeration of an Audio Tecnica 440MLA, which I purchsed because of rave reviews...so ya never know.
Tube in Preamp or Power amp?
Elizabeth is incorrect about the dangers of modern tube amps although exaggerating to make some point isn't all that rare around here, but does damage credibility. Although exceptions exist, I've been using tube amps since 1966 with no fires or ex...
Tube in Preamp or Power amp?
Bo is a misguided psuedo expert with limited experience and unsupported silly biases. Modern tube power amps are usually just as snappy as SS with NO loss of treble or "softening" of tone. This is a myth just as much as saying all SS amps are "ste...

Vandersteen 1Bs, Acurus A250, Adcom preamp, Rotel CD.
Do I Have the Wrong Cartridge?
Sumiko Pearls are available online of course and I bet some places have a return policy, but I'm not sure about that. At $125 it isn't too risky a purchase, and based on what sound you seem to be seeking it may be a great fit. You never know...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Is Walter Becker's (Steely Dan bass, guitar, writer) latest solo CD rock? Because I think it's sonically astounding, and perhaps a reference of sorts. Modern pop music producers might insist on high gain compressed sound because they think that's ...
Do you indulge when listening to your rig?
"Bean Freaks Hijack Audio Thread." Details at 11.
Do you indulge when listening to your rig?
Well...I'm not ACTUALLY good but my rig makes me THINK I am, and that's good enough for me!
Do you indulge when listening to your rig?
My most meaningful and intense hifi "drug" is the warm blanket of self satisfaction that envelops me when I listen to my rig and bask in the knowledge that I assembled it all by myself and since it is SO good, I must also be good. This by itself f...
Bob Carver LLC has been purchased by Emotiva
This is what I love about the forums...based on the cost of Carver tube stuff, I'm even more happy with my el cheapo Jolida amp that keeps on truckin' with zero issues and fabulous sound all day long. Was that snarky? Sorry...In any case, what the...
Cable design
I own 2 high performance German cars and if you look under the hood you can't see a damn thing. I also have paid relatively very little for my pile of cables as I find it much more fun to find clean used stuff. Besides, orphan cables need a nice h...
Best Amp for Timbre, Depth and Spatial Resolution?
The key point in that last post is "best picture." Who decides what is the best picture? YOU DO...and tastes differ. Julian Hirsch pretty much always said the same things so he was sort of boring compared to modern "objectivist" reviewers who aren...
How to meaningfully audition speakers??
Note that live drums go through plenty of processing at concerts including compression, digital reverbs, input pads, etc. The reason live drum sounds don't go through your hifi is the fact that uncompressed drums would blow up most any home system...
