opinions on audio refinement cd complete
I auditioned one in my house in 1999, and thought it was the best of the three I tried. The other two were a Musical Fidelity (model escapes me) and the Rega Planet. I also heard the Arcam 8 but didn't bring it home to audition. I especially liked...
I recently emailed John Atkinson of Stereophile
I think Stereophile should change the Recommended Components classification to price ranges. Most of us have budgets, and will buy, e.g., the best $2k speaker we can find, so long as it is good enough to improve our systems. I don't care if it's c...
Linn OEM Power Cables
My experience is mixed. I have tried a number of cords with several Linn pieces, although none of the cords, or the Linns, for that matter, are the top of the line units. At various points, I've used Kimber, Sonic Horizon, Cardas, JPS and Shunyata...
Which Totem is better: Mani-2 or Forest?
I've auditioned both and thought the Mani 2 clearly superior. Substantially better bass and fantastic sound stage width and depth. But, it costs a lot more, as you need tons of power and top quality stands. I think your amp is enough, but barely. ...
Best Frank Zappa´s Recordings
Interesting to see Hot Rats come up so often, as it is one of my favorites, yet not particularly accessible. It has been an inveterate demo disc for me, and I have taken it to hifi shops all around the country for years. I admit that the queer loo...
Loud and Live
Page and the Crowes was an excellent choice. You might follow it up with the Led Zep BBC Sessions. Loud, live, raw, and an excellent example of why they call guitars "axes."
halogen lighting?
A classic priorities question. Low voltage and dimmers are bad news for audio, separate lines or not. If the look is worth it, then do it, but it has a cost. I have a dimmer in my dedicated room, but I turn it off when I listen (I actually turn of...
Plinius warm-up
My Sim is on 24/7, as they recommend. Even then, I warm it up with music, fairly loud, for 15 minutes or more before settling in for serious listening. The difference is not subtle. Most improvement comes in image and soundstage depth and, well, w...
AudioPrism CD Stoplight & Auric illuminator work?
Auric Illuminator works for me. Also great on DVD's. It goes right to the worst digititis, that hardness and glare in the upper mids and low treble. It is not as expensive as it seems because it treats so many discs.
Linn speakers
I don't know any 3 way isobariks, but the Totem Mani 2 has a great midrange. You might also check into servo controlled subs, like in the Genesis line, and I think even the Linn subs are servo, if I'm not mistaken.
Surge/Power Conditioning For Amplifiers
I have not found a conditioner that doesn't soften transients or roll off the top of my 190 watt ss amp, although I certainly haven't tried em all. I plug it into the wall, but I share your concern about protecting it. And the rest of my system, n...
To Linn and Theta listeners...
Please post a follow up when you've settled on a solution. FWIW, I tried a Seismic Sink (pneumatic) under the Karik and thought it robbed some pace from the player. Too much of a good thing in the smoothness department. Audiopoints were better, fo...
Speaker placement/balance
There's no crying in baseball, and there are no shortcuts in audio. I think you have a good handle on this already. Placement is key and it is trial and error. My speakers are set up asymmetrically, with one speaker about an inch farther into the ...
To Linn and Theta listeners...
While I agree that the Majik is a bit overmatched with the N805, it is nonetheless a good performer (and a killer at its price - BTW, IMHO, the Linn underacheivers tend to be the top of the line units, not the Majik, Ninka, or LK140). My Majik ben...
I've a confession to make don't tell my wife
Mitch: Did you try audiopoints under the Sound Anchors or just under the 803? I am a fan of both Sound Anchors and audiopoints, but I haven't tried them together. Anyone?
