Positioning and Listening distance
My small room has made me a nearfield believer. I auditioned many two-way speakers because they generally have the best integration, but I craved more bass than any two-way could deliver. With three-way speakers, integration is tougher, but some d...
Bass traps/room treatments
I have sloped ceilings in my room, too (my forehead is also sloped, so be careful), so I know they are a mixed blessing. I also use a long wall set up and I have recently added some ASC products. But before I did that, I spent a year adjusting spe...
How much is a used Linn Karik worth?
I paid 1350 for mine over this site about a year ago. A bargain, given that you get Linn service and the build quality is first rate. Also check out the Meridian 508. It's similar in sound, but a bit richer; not quite as detailed or transparent.
Why pass video signal through processor?
I don't. I run my DVD on component cables straight to the TV. The only cost is that I have to switch the video source on the TV, separately from selecting the audio, which I run straight to my processor. Shorter signal paths are always better, I say.
kontact kleaner
I tried this product a few years ago and heard absolutely no difference. At that time, my preamp-in connectors and pre-to-power connectors were all XLR, which are "gas tight," and that may have reduced the need for/effectiveness of Kontact. My spe...
RPG Skyline mounting on ceiling
Rdr4b - Let us know how this works out. I have wondered about the effect of Skylines on the ceiling (it's the only untreated surface in my room), but I've never gotten out of my listening chair, pulled out the ladder and tried it out.
Warm sounding ss power amps
Bright systems are often a function, in part, of bright rooms. Acoustic damping/diffusion could help a lot, especially sidewalls at the point of first reflection. I agree also that cleaner AC will really open up the upper-mids by removing grain an...
Linn Lingo
I tried JPS Labs Analog and Shunyata Sidewinder and found almost no difference. Slightly softer bass with the JPS, and smaller soundstage with the Shunyata, as I recall. I've also found my Karik CD player to be almost immune to PC's. I think Linn ...
Best Whole House Audio?
Multiroom audio is overlooked by audiophiles, and it's a shame. I love my multiroom system, and I get to listen to a lot more music than on my highend system off in corner room. The rock'n'roll kitchen is a grin factory! If sound quality and musica...
Is my Salesman telling the Truth?
I have had the same experience as Adamanteus, where a salesman will disparage a brand he doesn't carry. I hate this. In fact, when I go to a new shop I will sometimes bring up another, competing brand to gauge the reaction. If a salesman starts po...
Rega Mira/Brio ?
I bought a Brio a couple of years ago for a bedroom system, solely on the strength of reviews and my experience with the price/performance phenomenon known as the Planar 3. But I've been underwhelmed with the Brio. Nothing wrong with it, really, j...
Reasonably priced 25 Balanced IC s?
I've had good results with Tice. He makes a solid core six 9's copper that has all the attributes you would expect from solid core copper. I haven't seen it used, but the new (factory direct) price isn't too far above your target, I think.
Power Chords and Line Conditioning
For the best value, I would start with the power conditioner. Years ago I brought home a Tice Power Block, and it took months to get my jaw back off the floor. Since then I have experimented with power cords from Shunyata, JPS and Synergistic. The...
Your Listening chair
Don't overlook the importance of getting your ears to the right height, especially in the nearfield. This will depend on your particular speakers, of course, but a general rule is to get your ear between the midrange and tweeter. I just raised my ...
Best upgrade for the money ?
I agree with almost all of the above suggestions, but no one has yet chimed in to say that one of the best upgardes you can do is to add phono. Get something like a Rega Planar 3 with a Grado or Sumiko Blue Point. It will KILL you Micromega. Even ...
