Reel to Reel Machine for 15 ips playback
@tomic601 - yo. thank you for talking to Max.
Reel to Reel Machine for 15 ips playback
The Mara machines are reconditioned MCIs which I remember from the ’70s in studios. I’m pretty sure they get credit for auto-locate- you could punch in a number and the deck would advance (or rewind) to that point. These were 24 tracks, with MCI b...
What characteristics do you listen for when purchasing amps/preamps ?
I don’t think you can speak of amplification without the speaker in mind. Get some seat time with systems that are considered the "best" if you are in a place where you can do that. And then figure out what sound you like. I have a particular be...
Reel to Reel Machine for 15 ips playback
You really gotta get with the tape heads, with Myles Astor, Mike Lavigne, and others who are plugged in. One thing is sound. Another is tape handling. Also your location is possibly important. There are people who supply heads or will relap yours...
What is the current retail cost of your reference system?
I’m not sure throwing out a figure representing the retail value (or actual amount paid) tells you much. What about the person who has purchased equipment in considered fashion, perhaps ten years ago or more? Is that a lesser system, qualitatively...
Solving the "complex music problem"?
To me, it is a combination of things. I call it congestion. Where it loses its direct, immediate quality of conveying the sound of an instrument and begins to sound like a recording playing at you. Some people opt for more analytical systems to de...
Symptoms of UN-CLEAN power
I don’t think I’ve posted to this thread yet. Stop me if you’ve heard this. I’d start at the meter. Your power company can pull it for you. Are the contacts corroded? What kind of wire runs from that? What is your feed from the street "transforme...
Room Layout and Acoustic Improvements on a Limited Budget
You need to control reflective surfaces. I wouldn’t start writing checks for treatment until you have dealt with the fundamentals of your room, what position the speakers should be in given the equipment and room, where you are creating problems t...
Best turntable under $4000
@audioguy85 - that looks like the Thorens from the early '70s. Those were nice tables.
Best turntable under $4000
I have owned a Technics SP 10 since 1973 and it still worked but the power switch was bad. I had Bill Thalmann go over it, do the Krebs mod, a reasonably priced plinth and eventually installed a Kuzma 4 Pt. 9" arm on it. I can't remember what the ...
Room treatment ideas for annoying external noises
At a certain point, it isn’t room treatment, it is soundproofing. I can measure the ambient noise in my room during the day and it is around 33 db, C weighted, on an uncalibrated SPL meter. (I have several and they are all within the same range)....
Minusk platform
Yep, it works best when it is at or close to the top of the load limit. Mine is 250 lbs and I'm pretty close.
Minusk platform
I have a Kuzma XL, all machined brass on the big Minus K bench top and use the stand supplied by Minus K. But I use an HRS isolation platform on top of the Minus K, beneath the turntable.  I've never heard any ringing and believe me, my 104 db sen...
Farichild 260
Do an internet search. The prices vary- there was a very nice original which needed to be restored but looked clean asking around 3700+ a year ago. It sold, not sure at what price. Everything is more expensive than a year ago. I don’t know the ma...
Is there anything better than live recordings?
Yeah, it depends. There is sometimes an energy between the band and the audience that just doesn't exist in the studio. But as others have noted not all recordings are created equal.
