Four Hour Tube Amp Warm-Up
I always enjoyed the process of hearing things open up- I'd say 45 minutes is sufficient for the Lamm ML2 SETs and a couple or three sides of LP for the cartridge to really come into its own (after initial settle in which could vary depending on c...
Vendetta Research SCP-2a price out of line?
I remember looking for one years ago and came up with nada. This was circa 2006 and then it was easily 2 grand, maybe a little more. I think there are some others that are highly regarded, but I’d have to re-research it. (Expressive Technologies w...
Why Is Hi Fi Gear So Darn Expensive?
@grislybutter -fair comment and my observations may be dated. At the time I came up, it was possible to buy really good hi-fi without being rich. I depended much on used cast offs from the flavor of the month club. Now, that may be out of time. I...
Why Is Hi Fi Gear So Darn Expensive?
Was it Julie Mullins from one of the legacy mags that recently described the trend of manufacturers targeting the "ultra" high-end? I know I commented on it, and thought it was here (though I'm not a regular reader of the magazines anymore). In t...
Have you heard a VAS cartridge?
I have one. Steve sent it to me after I had purchased another cartridge- an old Monster- that he had retipped. I generally use high-line cartridges in my main system and this was intended for my vintage system. I wrote about it here: Beyon...
Does a brand new electrical circuit for audio gear benefit from burn in/break in time?
Sonic memory is an ephemeral thing.
Does a brand new electrical circuit for audio gear benefit from burn in/break in time?
When I relocated from NY to Texas and had the fairly substantial electrical subsystem installed here (described in some detail in another thread you are on), I found that the system sounded bright at first. I know some audiophiles believe in burn ...
Soundstage drastically worsened when I replaced a solid state AV amp with tubes.
I've found things as small as a change of record weight/clamp on my TT to affect the overall presentation. Readjusting crossovers, etc made a big difference. You might find that repositioning your speakers with the tube amp makes a big difference....
Experiences with the Degritter RCM
Couple things to observe: one, using these devices as workhorses may lead to failure. It depends on how heavily you rely on them. Note questions in the thread I mentioned above about transducer life. Some folks will use these machines as their so...
Dedicated Line - Things to consider
@Jea48 is one of the resident experts on Code and beyond. My experience: you eliminate some potential problems by running dedicated line(s) so your system isn’t sharing a branch circuit with noisy lighting, appliances, etc. The audiophile way sh...
What's the oddest thing in your music collection?
I have one (on CD, not sure it was released on LP) of a guy playing a shofar but I think he is sporting a third eye. There's a whole body of this stuff, a genre. some of it is pretty out there!
What's the oddest thing in your music collection?
@mapman - have you heard Hasidic new wave stuff?
What's the oddest thing in your music collection?
@dekay : is it Tony Schwartz 1, 2, 3 And A Zing Zing Zing-  Demme was a neighbor when I lived near Nyack. Very nice guy. We used to bump into him at the local sushi bar and never talked about his films, just stuff about the 'hood. Sorry he's gone...
Experiences with the Degritter RCM
There is a very long informative thread on the Hoffman forum devoted to the Degritter that you might find helpful. Apologies if this is inappropriate diversion.
Does anyone know of a repair service for Lamm amplifiers?
Lamm is supposed to be back up and running out of Florida. Vlad’s wife, Elina, usually dealt with the phone but the daughter is now involved. I reached out to the general email box to touch base with Elina a few months after Vlad passed, but have ...
