Whatever Happened To SAE?
Remember Quintessence? I had their preamp for a little while back in around 1973 or so. I worked for a dealer and tried a couple of them- each one sounded a little different. I remember putting the preamp to the 'challenge' of an ARC SP-3. The ARC...
Lexicon vs Meridian
I haven't listened to the current Lexicon offerings and my Meridian processort is a pre-DTS version, but I had the big Lexicon in my system at that time, and it sounded far more artificial (if that is possible) than the Meridian. Better than both,...
Schroeder vs. Triplanar VII Sonic Differences
Well, I took delivery of a Triplanar VII yesterday, and while I had no plans to set it up myself, I couldn't resist. (The guy I rely on to set up is oot). It wasn't too difficult. It seems straightforward in its operation- and tracks pretty well w...
High Efficiency System- Noise Floor Reality Check?
Thnx Doug. Interesting angle. I'll call my buddy Jim Smith about that- he was the importer 'til recently.
High Efficiency System- Noise Floor Reality Check?
Well, no joy yet. Got one of those Granite Ground Zero thingies, it does work, but it is not solving my problem (yet). In fairness to the manufacturer, I don't want to suggest that I have reached the end of all possibilities in using it- for examp...
Experience with the new Avantgarde Duo Omega
Yep, please do. JUst got my Duos a couple months ago, not ready to upgrade them yet, but interested in your findings.
High Efficiency System- Noise Floor Reality Check?
Well, you guys represent the extremes of the internal debate I have been wrestling with- it shouldn't bother me, but I don't like knowing it's there.FWIW, I have already tried virtually every permutation I can within this room; I have yet another ...
Acoustic absorber panel question
2s vote for realtraps- probably not as cheap as DYI, but extremely cost effective for what you get. Particularly the Mondo bass traps. Also, read the info on their site, pretty helpful.

Bob- thanks for chiming in. One nice thing about this 'hobby' is that you can interact directly with the designers. I'll keep my eyes out- your products are among the most highly regarded in our analog world. Regards,
Classic speakers to hunt down used
I owned, listened to and sold many of those speakers in the early 70's. The AR-KLH-Advent followed a certain lineage of Henry Kloss and the Advents easily outplayed most of the comparable box speakers in the day. The big AR3a was probably a better...
The Single Piece That Started Today's HIGH END ?
I was around, and geeked on audio in in early 1970's. I think you have to separate the US, European and Japanese markets as very distinct from each other at that time. In the US, there was an 'old school' consisting of Marantz tube equipment (7c p...

Thnx, Rwd. Nice Revox (what was that, an A-77? It's been so long and that nomenclature just popped into my head). I also spied what looked like a smoked Cohiba, perhaps an Esplendido, in the ashtray. I won't ask where that cigar came from. :)Regar...

NOt a bad thought. The Olympus is on the high side of expensive cartridges, but the 'trade in' allowance for my Parnassus apparently takes account of the fact that it is an early one, having platinum plates sourced from unobtainium, and is what is...

Gonna try the big Transfiguration- have a old Parnassus that is readily trade-up-able to a Titan- have a Van de Hul something or other sitting around- and my old friend George has insisted that I try a couple, including the Colibri. Why, any sugge...

Thnx, Doug. Quite helpful.
