BEST CD TRANSPORT
As a mainly vinyl LP guy, I bought the entry level C.E.C. transport that I've used with a couple different DACs. It delivers what's on the disc without any artifacts and doesn't have the sound I used to associate with "bad CD." Some Redbook sounds...
New Cartridge Causing Intermittent Popping
Good for you. Troubleshooting that kind of thing can be maddening. I had an intermittent crackle a few years ago. Swapped out leads, all new tubes in everything (a little premature, but I wanted to make sure), a wanky XLR connector that I sent bac...
Jazz for aficionados
@stuartk said "BTW, the "spiritual Jazz" series is on the British label "Jazzman" I quickly scanned the various albums-- there's some material on these that is simply unobtanium these days as OG LPs. Great introduction to the genre. I'm a huge C...
George Winston has passed away
I remember him, some of his albums and of course the label. Apparently, he was into old timey stuff before he did the New Age music-- Fats Waller, barrelhouse and stride. It was an interesting era for music. RIP.
The "Very Best Record Cleaning Formulation"
@Wizzard- I’m fascinated by archival techniques including those used for LPs (not shellac). Most of what I did was compare sonic results using different commercially available fluids and methods. I met Neil Antin (@Antinn) on these fora - he is th...
The "Very Best Record Cleaning Formulation"
There was an apocryphal story about Percy Wilson's working group (that eventually led to the Keith Monks machine) using high octane vodka. It's sold in the States under a few brands, best known as Everclear-- basically grain alcohol. I guess it co...
So This Really Is The End....
Nice eulogy for your local record store. I'm surprised they make any money these days too, apart from the rare/collector's market and that's not stuff you typically find in the local record store.
I need Hign compliance cartridges
I use Koetsus in my main system. In my vintage system, I use a Franken Denon 103 that has a micro ridge stylus, has been repotted into a wood body and tweaked by Steve Leung at VAS. His prices are reasonable, he can often supply the completed cart...
Head-Fi can be so hardcore
I don’t actively participate on that forum but DubStep Girl’s exhaustive comparison of rectifier tubes was invaluable to me and among the various tubes I’ve rolled, I found her descriptions to be spot on. Of course, market prices have gone up and ...
Best Forum to hear experienced audiophiles exchange thoughts?
Back in the day, before the Internet, we used to do listening sessions among friends. Some were associated with audio clubs --not so easy to find unless you are near a large metro area--and some were entirely informal--just a hang at someone's hou...
Has Your Hobby Changed?
Congrats on retirement @mikelavigne. If your experience is anything like mine, you'll find yourself just as busy, but hopefully spending more of that time on the things you care about.  I started in this hobby as an audiophile with audiophile gea...
Original Quads (57) - the perfect amp
I ran super tweets with my 57s back in the day-- Deccas, which I still have and Sequerras, which were a good substitute (also used ribbons). It gave the Quad a broader sweet spot, given how beamy the original tweeter panel is- but it wasn’t a sub...
Original Quads (57) - the perfect amp

Original Quads (57) - the perfect amp
Quad II with quality glass. I’m running real GEC KT 66s. I did a piece on the web which has links on amps for the 57. I’ve owned mine since 1974 (they’ve been restored by Electrostatic Solutions-- there are several other amps mentioned). When I us...
My Sonic Lab Platinum v Gold Signature
@wrm57 - I’d have to look at the unit or a drawing of it to tell you but with the Airtight Supreme I think the setting was roughly 82 ohms [oops, I checked the drawing I think it was 70 ohms] on the "primary" side (if that is the correct way to de...
