Static Electricity on Vinyl
Wearing shoes or socks on carpeting is a sure fire way to create a charge; I only play and handle records in bare feet. Re-sleeving a record can create a charge- some of the aftermarket inner sleeves are "anti-static" but you have to sort through ...
Jazz for aficionados
My interest in jazz on LP was revived by digging into so-called "spiritual jazz"- the Heath Bros. "Marchin' On" on Strata-East (many very cool records on that label but now pricey) and Lloyd McNeill's "Washington Suite," also expensive as an origi...
Dedicated power circuits... Huge improvement!!!
@wig- there are some threads where @jea48 has weighed in with some excellent tips, all in keeping with Code. This summary won’t do the subject justice, but:look for the quieter leg if you are in the States, the one with fewer noisy appliances, lik...
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
@snapsc- I would venture that if a system produces piano convincingly it ought to do most everything else well, given not only the range of the instrument, but the other demands placed on its reproduction-- dynamics, power, timing, harmonics, etc....
Quadraphonic records (LPs to you and me)
I remember all this stuff, but doubt I ever even heard a CD-4 record back in the day set up on a system to properly decode it; the SQ and QS formats had more market penetration, at least where I was in the NE in the early ’70s, but even those fade...
What is your goto reference recording
One of my go-to records for set up and dialing in is a standard issue early pressing of Janis Ian’s Between the Lines- has lot’s of the stuff you’d likely use to check sound- female voice, strings (real), some orchestral parts, some acoustic, some...
Classical Music for Aficionados
@newbee - my thanks. I'm not sure the entire body of Scriabin's work can be described as spare. There's a sound that I'll try and find a better example of, with fewer notes, more held notes. Appreciate the recommendations-- I abandoned classical f...
Classical Music for Aficionados
@newbee -yes, Scriabin and similar spare, but ’modern’ circa the early part of the 20th century. Thanks for the recommendation re that CD set.
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
@shadorne - thanks for all of that. My Nord is older- probably 8 or 9 years? I had a Motion Sound? amp- not sure it is still in production. Now that I'm in Austin, it's on my list to have the amp repaired or replaced and update the Nord. I actuall...
Classical Music for Aficionados
I’ve found that I like a certain period of modernist piano- some of the work of Scriabin. I gather that one of the best interpreters was his son in law, Sofronitsky. The vinyl selections seem pretty bleak, originating from the old USSR. Any sugges...
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
@martykl - not sure if you were referring to my earlier post about the Nord not sounding like a real piano (or a Rhodes for that matter). Just to be clear if you were referring to my post, I wasn't talking about the recording process, digital v an...
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
@bdp24 - I’d settle for being 1/2 right 1/2 the time, but thank you. There was a pretty serious piano restoration house near me when I lived in Westchester, NY- they had a warehouse full of big old grand pianos, some virtually shells, others compl...
What are the best loudspeakers under $4000 to re-create lifelike piano
Aside from system requirements, I find that a lot of recordings of piano to be unconvincing. Two "tells" for me- (the loss of) the harmonic overtones and their decay, and the gravitas of the deeper bass registers. There is also the issue of perspe...
You pick
Another long time Quad ESL owner--since 1973. I recently had my pair restored and use them with a pair of restored Quad II amps with GEC Kt 66s. They sound wonderful-- I hadn't run them in a long time; I had changed to the Crosby modded Quad 63 ba...
Most overrated bands
Leaving aside matters of taste, there's also time and context--the Beatles enjoyed being on the leading edge of the so-called British Invasion. I got lost at around the time of Sgt. Pepper, but still think side 2 of Abbey Road is one of the best L...
