SME Tonearm Question
I went through the same thing about 20 years ago.  Bought a new IV.Vi through a local dealer and there was no cable in the box.  My type III came with a cable, and I approached my dealer and complained.  His response was that cables were no longer...
Preamps with two main-outs
I too am baffled.  My Mac C100 has two outs which I use for biamping and if I power down one set of amps the other keeps working.  There is no separate control for individual outputs, both are always going.Bill
Tube vs Solid State
I biamp my 801Ns with solid state and tubes and am happy with the results.  The biggest issue was balancing the amps.  My amps don't have gain controls and the SS amps had to be padded down a little as the bass was too strong.  Adding the tubes to...
12 ft pair of thick speakers cables?? Can they be cut downt to a 6 ft pair??
I have done so.  Many years ago, but in memory not that big a job.  Cut a 7-foot cable into halves.  Per Shadorne, with the necessary tools can be done neatly.Bill
Old JBL recones
missioncoonery-thanks for the response.  A quick look on EBAY reminded me that there are foam surround repair kits.  Might be the ticket.A  senior moment is what I'll claim.Bill
Old JBL recones
Thanks for the responses.  I have relayed this information to my friend, and he is very appreciative.  I think he will contact the local-to-him Berkeley facility first and work outward from there. This was my first large speaker system.  2215's w/p...
I have seen some Interesting comments about Mcintosh lately
I've been a Mac fan since the sixties.  Couldn't afford  it until the eighties.  I used to read the US stereo mags, particularly Stereo and HiFi back then, and I remember that around 1970 or so, Mac stopped being mentioned in the magazines.  The s...
Rock with strings
I don't know how well it fits, but It's A Beautiful Day used an electric violin and rocked out.Bill
KRELL FPB 650M MONO BLOCKS ..?
I have no experience with Krell and cannot comment on your specific question, but when I bought my 801Ns I had an MC7300 that at 300W/channel I thought would be fine. It wasn't. Replacing the MC7300 with a pair of MC1000 monoblocks made a big diff...
Which Mc better Mid/High performance in BiAmp set up?
I bi-amped my 801Ns using MC1000 for the low end and an MC2000 for the highs. The tubes really smoothed out the high end in my case. However, the lower power held down the MC1000's a bit. Also, you may need an amp with volume controls. I had to pa...
Anti-skating- test records vs. ears
I have never assumed that anti skate was expressed in gram increments. It is a numerical value to use during setup. Making it correspond to tracking force simplifies things. Whether or not it is accurate is another thing, which as the above poster...
What started you on the path to being audionut?
My story started like Jameswei's. My folks bought a large Magnavox console in the sixties with 15" woofers, horn highend and 100 watt amp. I thought it sounded better than anything I had ever heard, until the guy in the room next to mine in the do...
Need help balancing tonearm/ heavy cartridge
If I understand the problem correctly, the solution might be easy. The only important thing is the tracking force. Assuming that you are using a scale to set the vtf, it is not necessary to balance first. Balancing is only important if you are usi...
What happens when a tube amp fails?
I would like to add to Newbee's first item that the 'pop' can be very loud. When one of the output tubes in my MC2000 went, I thought at first that someone had fired a gun right outside the window behind the amp. It took out a resistor, too. The a...
If you had a Benz cartridge would you let someone
About 14 years ago I had my ruby re-tipped by Van Den Hul. I had this done because I liked the sound of Van Den Hul stylii. The results were as I hoped, and I have never regretted my decision. The cartridge does sound different since the re-tip, b...
