How do I know if I need a sub woofer?
I have large speakers with 15" woofers that are spec'd to 30 hertz.  When I measure my in-room response I have strong output to 20 hertz, the lower limit of my analyzer.  I would still like to have subs but space and monetary concerns have kept me...
Is bi amping worth it ?
If you are using one 601 monoblock to drive the woofers of both speakers and another 601 monoblock to drive the high frequencies of both speakers, you are defeating stereo operation.  You are sending the same signal to both of your speakers, and a...
Is bi amping worth it ?
Passive bi-amping is fine to try if your speakers have two sets of binding posts, one for high frequencies and one for low frequencies, as long as the two sets of posts are completely isolated electrically from each other. There have been speaker...
Is bi amping worth it ?
Knotscott said it pretty well.  A stereo amplifier is two one-channel amplifiers in one chassis which happen to share one power supply (usually).  There is an input and an output for each channel.  Really not different than setting two monoblocks ...
Is bi amping worth it ?
@billpete  Hi other Bill I was just pointing out that if two identical stereo amplifiers are used, one channel of each amp could drive the woofers and the other channel could drive the mids and highs.  Configured in this way each speaker could h...
Is bi amping worth it ?
FWIW, the big advantage to passive bi-amping is being able to match amplifiers to speaker requirements.  In other words, you can run a big honking amp to power your power hungry woofers to bring out their capabilities and use an amp that you love ...
Is bi amping worth it ?
I have been puzzling through your bi-amp instructions as posted.  Bi-amping means using separate channels of amplification for the high and low frequencies on each speaker.  Inherently this requires four channels of amplification for a stereo pair...
SME 309 Tonearms: Production Years and Variations
Of the five SME arms I own, only the most recent, a 309 purchased during the year before they stopped selling arms, has the coloured logo.  It is also the only one with serial # information on the box, stickered on. My arms go back to the 80s. T...
Anyone ever replaced a tweeter in B&W Formation Duo speaker
Mine was not that expensive, maybe a couple hundred at most.  The diamond tweets are a lot higher though. Bill
Anyone ever replaced a tweeter in B&W Formation Duo speaker
I don't know how applicable this is, but I have replaced a tweeter on one of my N801s which have a similar looking mounting on the top of the enclosure. The replacement was pretty easy.  The rim around the front of the tweeter housing is a twist-...
Do I need a MC cartridge now? Or an attenuator?
Oops.  Too late. Bill
Do I need a MC cartridge now? Or an attenuator?
I agree with the above comments.  However, the Laiv L-Ext Phono does have a 47k setting. Bill
B&W Matrix 800: Bi-amping thoughts?
And, I was surprised to find that when the monoblocks were in play, even lower volumes sounded more filled out. sorry for the double posts, but I'm kind of a slow thinker. Bill
B&W Matrix 800: Bi-amping thoughts?
I can only speak about my own experience.  My N801s are 91db.  The recommended power range is 50 to 1000 watts.  Using my 300 watt amp, volume levels would go high (SPL) but the bass just didn't keep up.  I think a high power high current amp is w...
