stylus condition and maintenance
another route is to get/borrow a 100x or greater microscope and look at the cantilever and stylus. That should tell you if they are straight and/or worn on one side or the other. Listening though is the final test.
Pre-amp newbie question
A few general remarksgenerally, once you get up to 1mVolt or more a mm input can be used. Generally again, under 1mVolt it is usually better to use a MC input, due to the higher gain needed. Most MM phono preamps are preset to 47k as a load, as you...
Negative Feedback a deal killer?
If you can audition it, that should settle the case for you.
Recommended Shostakovich?
I am a fan of his 24 preludes and fugues by Gilels, his architecture is amazing, he never did a complete set but you can often find a few here and there.the same goes for Richter. Amazingly they seemed to prefer to do ones the other didn't. Betwee...
Seasoned ears only
There are times when you hear something that is so strong that it stops you in your tracks and all you do is listen. When a speaker or set up does that for you, whether it is vintage or new, it is worth checking it out and seeking to find out why a...
ConradJohnson--Can their vintage compete with new?
It is more than 10 years old but the best vintage C-J in my opinion for a preamp was their PV-11 with phono. A great piece, sorry I let mine go, no other piece elicits that response.
Lowther's Cabinet
They used to have a kit for the Medallion, Art Dudley had an article in Listener on how to put it together. Check it via google and their web site to see if it is still available
Faint click from speakers
Had something similar. Only with my monoblocks it happened with only one speaker. The culprit was a capacitor in one of the amps. It initially took hours for it to occur but over time it increased till I couldn't turn on the amp without the sound....
What's a "large" room
Generally it seems to be about 20 x 25 or larger, from my take on things, it is definitely bigger than a mid-size room and much larger than a small one.
SACD vs. Vinyl
If your buying music that is not available on vinyl then for me at least, SACD is worth it. If you can get it on vinyl why wouldn't you. Heard a Diana Krall cd then heard the SACD, it was worth the upgrade to me. YMMV
conrad-johnson system questions
Have had and still have a C-J product. Started out with the PV-11, the only component I've ever regretted selling. Got the MV52 amp and later upgraded to the Premier 11a, a definite improvement. Upgraded the pv-11 to a Premier 16 which is a great ...
How to listen to the good stuff?
Agree with Shadorne, when I heard my present amps, they were being sold by someone on audiogon nearby it was obviously to me, they were something special. Have heard some decent sound in stores but rarely enough to get me back, When I have, that g...
Universal Player question
Have an SACD player and there are some SACD's that it will not play, not many, but it is a few years old to, so...
Thought on OTL tube amps
don't mean to hijack the thread BUT was wondering why all the OTL amps I know of are tubes. Are there no solid state OTL amps? If not, why not? Just curious and hope someone will answer a question.
SET or Push Pull Amps for Legacy Focus SE
Have the Legacy Focus 20/20 which are similar. Used them with Conrad-Johnson MV-52's and their Premier 11a's. Both worked very well, the Premier 11a's even more so. BUT moved onto Wyetech Topaz 211 monoblocks. They are amazing. So all that can be ...
