Amplifier and Speaker Advice needed
Used Vandersteen 2's & McCormack amp.
Does your system do things better in the dark?
My system dissapears!
Does Technology Trump Quality?
I'm not sure what your asking, but, I'll give it a go. It depends. Some classic cars, watches etc., have much better build quality but don't perform as well as more modern less well built versions. On the other hand some modern versions with more ...
Refurbish a classic amp or replace it?
I think it depends on the amp and the manufacturer. Some amps have "classic" status and some brands have better customer service and reputation. Since their take over of Harmon has not garnered much praise here for their handling of ML gear. Havin...
Did anybody else notice this about PSB Speakers?
Despite glowing reviews, I never much cared for PSB's, especially as their price point grew. For just a few more bucks I much prefered others. I originaly thought the little Alpha's were quite good for the money, but the impedance was too tough on...
jumping back in, where should i start?
Buy your speakers before your amp!
Driving a Thiel
Hevac1, there's a difference between low range and wide range.
Using Samsung DVD player as CD player?
Some DVD players turn off their video functions when they read CD's. This is a fairly modest system, while you might appreciate a difference with a seperate CD player, I don't think the difference will be huge. Depending on how much you need the D...
Go with a tube preamp or not?
Jmcgrogan2 offers very good advice. Keep an eye on your amps input impedance, it's not ideal for many tube pres. You might beb able to find a used Sonic Frontiers 2 in your price range, but there's no phono.
jumping back in, where should i start?
Start with speakers. If you want to keep your B&W's, Classe' amps work well with them, and the Classe' amps are noted for the sound you seem to be aspiring to.
The closest approach: what amplification?
Duke, thanks.
The closest approach: what amplification?
Samujohn, I couldn't agree more! The promise is very exciting. On the other hand, I would have thought further inroads would have been already made.
The closest approach: what amplification?
Duke, using an auto transformer would, at least to my sensibilities, be a bit beyond typical speaker design. In my limited experience, those speaker designers that have designed their speakers to have a smooth impedance curve such as Jim Thiel, as...
Driving a Thiel
Hevac1, the Thiels don't have a "wide Ohm range", in fact it's just the opposite.Curio, the Thiels don't have a "long fall", see above.Thiels can be run with some tube amps, but due to the load, tubes aren't the most cost efficient way to power them.
From Vandersteen 2CE to Devore Gibbons 8 or Focal
I too, don't find the Vandy's to be bright. Along with the other excellent responses, I wonder if your 7' listening distance might be just a bit close?
