Hack, remember that a high current amp will decrease power into higher loads. There are limitations in either case. Choose your speakers and amplify them appropriately.

With truly balanced gear and all other things being equal; XLR's are better.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but I would assume that the dowels and the top plate would be sources of diffraction, something I would assume would be an anathema to a Vandersteen design.
