Speakers free of grain, glare and steel?
All that detail, isn't neccesarilly quality. Higher efficiency allows more grunge in too. There are so many variables in loudspeakers, never mind the loudspeaker to room interface, that the idea of "all other things being equal" is purely an acade...
Is the most efficient speaker the best speaker?
Even speakers with efficiency an of 100 dB/W in a typical setting, will require about 200 Watts per channel to achieve 120 dB. One would have to have an extremely large room to adequately contain 120 dB with any semblance of scale, and require muc...
How Much Difference Does a More Powerful Amp Make?
Larryi, I think in a typical setting, a single 86 dB/W efficient speaker playing at one meter in free field (no room)with only 20 Watts available, might be significantly less loud than 99 dB.http://myhometheater.homestead.com/splcalculator.htmlI w...

"...--all other things being equal?"Not bloody likely.
The Physics of Electricity
Stevecham, have you seen the price of silver lately?

Pmboyd, nothing beats a home audition. In the mean time, you might find this old thread interesting:http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?cspkr&1015294796&openusid&zzSean&4&5#Sean
Speakers free of grain, glare and steel?
Mapman, just saying it's a fact doesn't make it so.
Speakers free of grain, glare and steel?
Mapman, I disagree. Not all of OHM's speakers feature bending wave Walsh drivers, the DDD drivers that German Physiks uses doesn't have the mechanical cross-overs that the Walsh drivers do.
The Physics of Electricity
Trebejo, Jim Thiel had a degree in physics, and though I can't say for sure that he actually spent money on magic cables, he did have some prefered cables that he would diplomatically recommend for use with his speakers.
Reference DACS: An overall perspective
Muralman1, "Every time the signal is switched, filtered, made to jump hoops, the more the signal looses bits and pieces." Very interesting comment comming from you, after you have so frequently posted so many positive comments re: your prefered sw...
How Much Difference Does a More Powerful Amp Make?
If one listens to music at levels that come near the levels one might hear at a live venue, and that includes unamplified concerts, under powered amps can be subject to clipping during peaks. Fairly high powered SS amps without global feed back ha...
Speakers free of grain, glare and steel?
Some of us prefer the older OHMs with real Walsh drivers.
Speakers free of grain, glare and steel?
The closet suggestion I can think of is the Vandersteens.
How Much Difference Does a More Powerful Amp Make?
The first Watt of a more powerful amplifier need not be worse than the first Watt of a less powerful amplifier. Furthermore, a more powerful amplifier can often provide better power longer than a lower powered amplifier, even though it hasn't exce...
What is your favorite 1 hit wonder from the 70's?
