Used Preamp on a budget advice please.
Georgehifi, I am under the impression that the Threshold S 500 II has an input sensitivity of 2.2 V for full output. If that's not the case I hope someone will correct me. Depending on the source of course, but with most digital devices that might...

^Well, it does seem as though he's been shopping this thread for advice on amplification for his CS 2.4 SE's for over a year now.

I'm not sure what you mean by the volume control being more effective? Does that mean you have greater volume range, or that the volume seems to increase sooner, or something else? Some volume controls actually work better as one uses more of its ...

Oblgny, which Threshold did you have? Did you ever have your CS 3.5 eq's modified to mono balanced units?
Why does bi-amping speakers sound better?
Bi-amping can allow some amplifiers to maintain their Class A bias longer.

What speakers?
help thiel 2.4 placement???
^As have all the Thiel CS 2 versions before; the 2.4's have 8" woofers.

^"Speculation"? I don't think that the principles of physics and electrical engineering can be merely disregarded as "speculation". Without the principles of which, this conversation probably wouldn't be happening.
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
I think choosing speakers first has it's advantages. More so than with other components speakers need to be paired more carefully with the room in which they will be placed. More so than with other components speakers are the most colored componen...
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
Atmashere, the OP said nothing of ESL's. I did make mention of :  "Most typical speakers....".
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
^ Lest anyone get the idea that the increase/decrease of power output by ss amps into decreased/increased impedances would suggest that frequency linearity would be compromised, the opposite is actually the case, they actually provide better freq...

^Thiel offered either a passive or active cross-over for their subs. The active was considerably more expensive.
Why are low impedance speakers harder to drive than high impedance speakers
Charles1dad, sometimes a speaker designer will add components to a cross-over to lower the impedance  in order to make the impedance flatter/smoother. Sometimes lowering the impedance allows for more current delivery in order to facilitate stronge...
