the sound of massed violins in classical orchestral recordings
This is not a problem that is ubiquitous; it affects perhaps a good number of recordings, but certainly not all of them, and to varying degrees.  From which I conclude that it has to do with the various recording conditions: the space, the mikes, ...

Charging A Fee To Demo An Amplifier In A Brick & Mortar Store
What I think this shows is the erosion of the function of B&M stores.  Before the internet, that's where you went to see, check out, and hear (!! what a concept) equipment.  If you liked what you heard, you started to think you might buy it, a...
High Performance Audio - The End?
@prof   You need to have experienced true enlightenment first (bodhi or satori, in all seven factors) before you can hope to begin to understand the three embeddings.  And as we all know, the absolutely most important things come in groups of three.

DGG quality varies over time.  Remember that DDD was already a thing by 1980.  Besides a slow, long learning curve, there's also the quality of the ADC being used to consider.  It was *early* DDD DGG recordings that were the worst offenders.

DACs should have switches (kind of like the equivalent of different RIAA curves) that compensate for different genres of music.
Help me understand "the swarm" in the broader audiophile world
@northman  Excellent observation!!  Mix-and-match subs, but the orientation in the socket of the after-market fuse is absolutely crucial.

It's well known that Karajan was a particularly enthusiastic early adopter of digital recording and the CD.  He make pronouncements on its superiority to anything achievable by analog technology.  And like I say, given the dubious quality of the e...
