Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice. My personal favorite is Sarah Vaughn, the great contralto. She is both unusual and at her best mesmerizing. While Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzsgerald, both contemporaries get more of the accolades I feel there is more emotion in her performances s...
Most unusual/mesmerizing female voice. Yma Sumac, unusual for sure and one for the ages.I have never heard any human being approach what she does with her voice. The range is absolutely spellbounding. Now it is another issue altogether whether her voice could be considered mesmerizing.
If you wanted to impress someone, which track? "I was playing Stan Getz "The Girl From Ipanema" and my 14 year old son got off his Xbox and walked in the room to see what was playing. That doesn't happen very often! It did sound VERY good!"Then again Mapman it could have been that cool bossa n...
New Speaker Cables for Merlin MME Bobby recommends Cardas GR, not cheap. I really like the Audience Au24's with the Merlins. Very thin, flexible and superb all around cable. I have not heard the e version. I had a pair and ended up "downgrading" based on a recommendation. I should...
If you wanted to impress someone, which track? Kurt_tank wrote: To be honest, I always prefer that my friends who come over and want to listen to my system, pick their own music. I have found that people tend to be more excited listening to music they know and love, rather than somebody else's...
Any smooth jazz fans out there? Getting back to the question about smooth jazz, about 20-25 years ago I really got into it the GRP label in particular with artists like Dave Grusin, Lee Ritenhour, Kevin Eubanks. I also have several albums by David Sanborne and Spyro Gyro both of...
Any smooth jazz fans out there? Yes Tpreaves of course you are right, we all have the right to state an opinion. But denegrating someone else's taste by calling it "crap" while well within the rights of any individual is still rude. While I realize that rude has taken on an acce...
Any smooth jazz fans out there? "Censoring opinion is the gateway to narrowmindedness. There is nothing wrong with naming crap when you hear it. It strengthens resolve. Hail satan"Chasmal, saying you "hate" something is one thing calling it "crap" without adding "IMO" is in my o...
Any smooth jazz fans out there? "That said, paraphrasing the Duke; "there's only 2 types of music, good & bad"Chazro I think I heard Louie say that exact same quote on the "Jazz" series by Ken Burns but maybe the Duke said it first, who knows?
Atma Sphere deserves praise "As for Ralph, anyone who grooves on Porcupine Tree is okay by me."Interesting you mention this group as I just saw them in Orlando this past Friday with very little familiarity with their music, a friend had an extra ticket.
the greatest pop song ever? I can't believe it, a Vogues song being listed as being one of the greatest pop songs ever. I really loved this group and they had some really good tunes in the early to mid 60's certainly 5 o'clock world would be one of them. Who would have ever ...
Monitors that use the Dynaudio Esotar Tweeter "The Extrema was an incredible speaker" amen to that! Too bad it was such a difficult load yet on my one and only extended listen at a show years ago I was truly blown away by this awesome design, one of those moments in this hobby you can never f...
Why nobody uses McIntosh with Vandersteen? Interestingly enough I had a pair of ancient modified MC-60's driving my Vandersteen 2C's in the early 90's and this comboover the Threshold S200 ss amp it replaced. Musically involving and never wanting, forgiving? yes, so what it didn't matter b...
Verity Audio: To Nagra or not to Nagra? I can't comment on all the choices but I did hear the Ovations and Sarastros driven by the Nagra and the Parsifals by the Berning ZH modified mono blocks at the same audio show. I personally preferred the Berning system but the Nagra was also quit...
Mozart Piano Concertos I second Clifford Curzon, he indeed will give you "shivers up the spine". I also second Brendal and Alicia de Larocca. There are many fine performances of Mozart's concertos but none have moved me as Curzon's do, well worth checking out. |
