Which tubed pre to "flesh out" my mids???
Cary SLP-98, the F1 version (direct coupled for superb bass) in particular.
Hi End rack really deliver?
Agree with Ejlif and others - Grand Prix Monaco modular racks and amp stands are expensive, but definitely worth it!
Definitive Technology - ST and STS
I have the aluminum ST towers and center (came out a few years ago) in my home theater - very good for the $$, but I'd not use them in my main (music-only) rig. Nice look, too - high WAF.Have not heard the new model w/powered subs, which were just...
Man Cave or No?
Yep, dedicated room is a must - I'm a night owl who likes it LOUD at times.
What other obsessions do you have?
Sports cars (Porsche 911 in particular), working out, college football, reading...and my new girlfriend. She is well on her way to assuming top priority, much to my amazement (and happiness)!
Autos with stock awsome sound systems; Recomend?
Aston Martin has a Linn system.
Help needed regarding purchase of Amp Stands.
The Grand Prix Monaco stands noticeably improved my Lamms' sonics, and are purty to boot.
Avantgarde Uno's and duo's
In a smallish room, the Uno can work very well - but one should still sit at least 10' from the horns for best integration. In the Uno, the subs have to work up to the 220Hz cutoff of the mid horn, whereas the larger Duo mid horn goes down to 170 Hz.
what is the best amp you've ever heard
Lamm ML2.
If money is not a problem
The ginormous aluminum multiway horns by Magico, or Avantgarde Trio Omegas with 3-4 pair of Basshorns.
What's your speaker IQ, and the best speaker?
Sold when I was in the biz (among others): Aerial 10T, Dunlavy SCIV and SCV, Magnepan MG20, Quad ESL-63, Snell Type B, Thiel CS7.2, Wilson W/P and X-1, etc. Personally have owned (chronologically): large Advents, Spica TC-50 w/Kinergetics subs, Sn...
Cary SLP-98 vs SLP-98 F1
Yes, Kevin Deal is a great resource on all things Cary. The F1 gives greater power at frequency extremes and is less syrupy...I love mine.
Remotes: Who needs 'em?
I for one would not be without a BASIC remote for my preamp - volume and mute (polarity would be nice, too).
Which preamp Dodd or Cary slp-98L
Never heard the Dodd, but am no fan of the 6922 tube. The Cary is a superb preamp for the money; be sure to hear the F1 version (direct coupled with oil caps), it's more extended and has superior bass compared to the basic '98.
With 15W tube amp, which speakers to use?
Omega and Reference 3A should be on your list.
