Class A Watts
In general, tube amps have output transformers- OTL amps being the exception. So tube amps generally have high impedance output because of the transformers. That means they like high impedance speakers. When the speaker impedance goes low the ampe...
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
So no one liked my magic coils story? Hmm. A lot of talk going nowhere here. Let me say this: there are hobbyists and there are the real pros and innovators. The ultimate are those who have not just designed and built amplifiers and speakers but h...
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
I should have summarized better. What I am saying is that Hifi is much more than a collection of circuit boards populated with components and boxes sitting on a shelf. There is still art and craftsmanship involved in every step of the sound reprod...
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
Raul, I'm an engineer and it is easy to get overwhelmed when considering all of the design issues and technical hurdles involved with music reproduction and begin to think that making any music at all is near impossible. Step back a moment and con...
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
Don't worry about inertia. Just add the cartridge effective mass to the tonearm's effective mass and use the cartridge compliance to calculate the system natural frequency. As long as it is around 10Hz, it's fine.
Why will no other turntable beat the EMT 927?
Raul and Lewm are both correct. The longer 12 inch arm can reduce tracking error but adds new design challenges by being longer. And as Lewm states, if the setup of the 12 inch arm is off a bit, the tracking error becomes worse than a 9 inch arm. ...
HD Down Load compared to Analog.
You know, 33 1/3 LPs are not the standard of Analog- Reel to reel master recordings are. LPs are full of compromises. LP vinyl was the sound medium for the masses. If the internet were around 3 or 4 decades ago this same discussion might be going ...
Do 45 RPM records need higher anti-skate setting?
Friction=skating, that's it. I remember back in the 70s some stereo shops had blank LPs for setting anti-skate. They would adjust the anti-skating on the tonearm until it would stay in the middle of the blank record. 45 rpm LPs can have a higher d...
ARC LS15: did they ever use Mundorf MCaps on it ?
If you go to the ARC Database. The LS15 pictured has Infinicaps.
CHecking tubes?
Have you cleaned all the connections sometime in the last 50 years? :) Seriously, though, maybe cleaning all of the connections would help. Worn preamp tubes generally sound dull, rolled off highs and flabby bass- at least on my old ARC preamp.
Do 45 RPM records need higher anti-skate setting?
Skating force is generated by the friction between the stylus and the vinyl. That's it. I researched it a few years back and learned that the coefficient of friction, which will determine the friction force generated, varied widely like from 0.1 t...
Is a dimmer noisy when it's turned OFF?
Oh, and also, you can dampen out the RF noise using an R/C circuit. (Resistor/Capacitor) that is the solution used on DC motors. DC motors use brushes that are rapidly making/breaking the electrical connection. A choke coil and capacitor kill the ...
Is a dimmer noisy when it's turned OFF?
I think the poster meant do dimmers make noise when switched off. They shouldn't make any electrical noise when switched off because the SCR circuitry should be depowered. Now, if the dimmer is only turned down to minimum and not actually switched...
HD Down Load compared to Analog.
Analog is like 1 billion kHz/1 billion Bit.
What's the weak link in my Analog chain?
Isolation. Not you- the turntable. Remember, the stylus is picking up vibrations that are being amplified 10,000 times! Okay, 66dB or more. It is a big number, I just don't feel like doing the math at the moment. So the smallest vibrations, even f...
