conrad johnson CT6 with solid state amp
Thanks for the replies everyone. I understand that newer cj gear is not as colored as the older gear, but there is a richness or palbability or depth or whatever term you choose in tube gear that most solid state doesn't have. That's why you use t...
Got a New CD Player and Now I'm Bummed
I would not spend significant amounts of money to get a marginal improvement in vinyl playback. I would save the money for your next digital upgrade. I think that most of the sound quality improvements have been wrung out of vinyl but cd players a...
Best sound on classic rock cds
Capitol recently reissued Linda Ronstadt's four albums for the label on a remastered two cd set and they sound pretty good. This is when Linda was more country or country rock. Definitely not as rockin' as her later stuff. Heart Like A Wheel is the...
Trumpet cds like Chinatown
I have 3 cds by trumpeteer Mark Isham and I think his sound could be described as ethereal. Mark played with Van Morrison on some of his more ethereal stuff but his work as a leader would be classified as jazz.Blue Sun, and two soundtracks coincid...
Used CD player for under $2000
I have a Cary 303/300 and I like it but I don't know if I would recommend it unconditionally. Like you I don't have the opportunity to listen to a lot of gear. The Cary gives you the option of tube or ss output and a number of upsample rates. If yo...
Herbie Hancock on the Grammys
Slothman, you probably won't beleive this but many people consider Pink Floyd to be commercial hacks not innovative artists.
Westwood One Radio LPs
Hi Gaslover, I didn't mean to denigrate your work or that of RTI. So are you saying that these lps would have very high quality sound?
Westwood One Radio LPs
I think the only way to determine the going price would be to put them up for auction on eBay. I am pretty sure that the sound would not be considered audiophile quality, but the music on them might be priceless. I would pay the guy a reasonable (...
What Happened to CD Clubs & Stores to Buy CDs?
BMG Music Club is still around and worth checking out. They are at www.bmgmusic.com
future of 2 channel CD sound
Two channel will be around as cds and downloads. I agree with the opinions that the sound quality of cds is limited by knowledge of how to record, master and produce a quality cd and the willingness to take the trouble to do it. I think that the s...
Am I getting it all?
I have had the same experience as Islandmandan. My set up is not as good though. When Michael Fremer started at Stereophile he jumped right in with his cd is crap, vinyl is so much better line. So I thought that's great, I'll get a turntable and h...
Your First Concert was.....
The Doors, August 1968, Cleveland Municipal Auditorium, $4Morrison was wasted and was in his provoking a riot phase. It was not what I'd hoped for musically, but it was an interesting experience. Actually, I've heard worse concerts recently becaus...
Who is your favorite blues guitarist
I would include many of the artists already mentioned among the best but I have to add Eric Clapton. Anyone who says he's too white or too rich is deaf. The man can play the blues.
Best Source For Quality Jazz CDs?
BMG Music Club always surprises me (in a good way) with the large amount of jazz they carry. Sound quality varies widely between titles, of course, but BMG cds are the same quality as cds sold anywhere else.
Preamp/amp far superior to just int. amp.?
Within a single manufacturers' line, spending more money will often get you better sound but not always. Also, you may have to pay a lot more money to get a small improvement in sound.Manufacturers try to avoid giving better sound for less $ in th...
