Attack of the Clone Amplifiers
This article is from 2009 and deals with a few ICE module amps. What he has found is interesting, but I’m not sure that it means much except for the amps mentioned. I’m sure there are many other examples of off-the-shelf parts being put in a fancy...
Bad NOS tubes...
Add me to the list of those who can hear differences between tubes and who enjoy fine tuning the sound of their systems with old stock tubes.aol, Talk to Kevin Deal at Upscale Audio. He is the importer of PrimaLuna amps and the expert on them. He ...
Anything you liked at the Newport Show?
I wasn’t able to visit most of the rooms mentioned, but the room that really knocked me out was Kyron Audio from Australia. Their Kronos speakers are cone dipoles and they are powered by a large box that is an all-in-one (dac, preamp, amp). They p...
Question on Aesthetix / Tube Maintenance
Hi Rob, To answer a couple of your questions,Tubes gradually wear out and at some point this will result in sound degradation. Small signal tubes (not power tubes) usually last 3,000 hours, give or take a thousand or so. Some old stock tubes (made...
Vandersteen 2xx - 100,000 units?
Vandersteen claims to have sold 100,000 pairs of Model 2s.  I have no reason to doubt them.
What makes an expensive speaker expensive
OK.  No argument that Vandersteen makes great speakers.  Can we agree that Wilson also makes great speakers and is not merely the beneficiary of good advertising and stupid buyers?I'm sure Fremer could come up with a list of reasons why he prefers...
Have the Golden Ear Tech 7's but considering a speaker a fuller sound and also musical
I agree with freediver.  I owned Dali Helicons and they were rich and musical, not the most transparent, but very easy to listen to.
What makes an expensive speaker expensive
cstooner, you never answered my question about why Michael Fremer, one of the people most obsessed with sound quality in the world, has upgraded his speakers twice and stayed with Wilsons (Maxx2 to Maxx 3 to Alexandria XLF)?  I'm sure he gets a gr...
Why are so many companies like harbeth making old speakers designs and charging thousends?
It appears from the posts above that the answer is high manufacturing costs in Britain and some people like the sound enough to pay the price.I disagree with the idea that improvements in speaker technology have not improved the sound of speakers ...
Dali Euphonia vs Wilson Sophia 1
I've owned Dali Helicons and liked them a lot.  I'd describe them as being a little on the warm, musical, less detailed side of the sound spectrum.  I don't have a clue as to whether they would work for you though.
engineering mistakes on recordings
I was listening to a live album recently, I can't remember the title at the moment, but whoever mixed it changed the locations of the different players on every track.  A little too much creativity I think.
What's going on with the audio market?
Let's keep the politics out, please.Let's not turn a perfectly good audio forum into a nasty mess.
Do female audiophiles exist
willgolf, you’re just going to have to get your wife to understand the necessity of a listening room in your new house. That will be yours and she can have the great room all to herself.  It's cheaper than a divorce.
Do female audiophiles exist
audiowoman, Nice to see you post here.  You may want to look into MQA (a new way of encoding digital music that is supposed to sound better, if you haven't heard) before buying a server.  If MQA is for real, you may want a streamer, a Tidal subscr...
Getting Personal Property Insurance for your rig.
I have Hartford homeowner’s and I have asked them several times if I needed extra coverage for an expensive stereo and large music collection and they have always told me no, that it’s covered under personal property. I have never filed a claim th...
