To preamp or not to preamp. That is the question.
I’ve tried it both ways, two different times, and each time I decided to keep the preamp. I use a Cambridge 851N streamer/DAC feeding a Bel Canto PRE5 to Bel Canto ref500 monoblocks, driving Dali Mentor 6 floorstanders. With the preamp in the syst...

I’ve been very happy with my Cambridge Audio 851N. Discomuntinued but you can find them for about a grand. I also just bought  a Cambridge Evo 75 for a little second system in the living room.  Very happy with the streaming and their Streammagic a...

Concerning high end audio names in new cars
Before I retired I drove 2500 miles a month. Sound was very important. My then Mercedes e class had a Harmon Kardon system that sounded great. I traded that for a 2018 with the new Burmester system—miles ahead of the HK. It still surprises me now ...

Do good power cords have to be stiff?
I was using Nordost Vishnus in my mid level system. A clear improvement over stock.  But they too were somewhat stiff. Replaced them with Morrow MAP3s which sound just as good as the Nordost and are quite flexible. If I get the upgrade itch I will...

What do audiophiles do in their cars?
I agree that most car systems sound pretty good—much better than 10-20 years ago. The Burmester in my Mercedes sounds very good.  It’s still a car, though, and the sound competes with wind motor and tire noise.  I’m done with XM radio. The sound i...

Are these exceptionally well recorded, or what?
They are class D (Bel Canto ref500m) and I do leave them on all the time. But they were off quite a while when I installed the preamp and reconfigured my cables.
