CAT Ultimate
If I had a CAT Ultimate I'd built two ladder stepped attenuators on Elma switches and put them in where the Volume and Balance controls are now, dual mono, and thus get rid of a mediocre series stepped attenuator that limits the performance of a l...
Room Treatments to Minimize Interactions
I'd start by reading F. Alton Everest's "Sound Studio Construction on a Budget" (which covers listening rooms too) or his "Master Handbook of Acoustics" 4th edition, to learn about room acoustics. If DIY treatment devices interest you and you have...
Sonic Frontiers Dying?
The Parts Connection, as others have noted in this forum, is up and running again--under a different spelling. Find it at www.partsconnexion.com. Chris Johnson, the former SF CEO, is in charge of the new TPC, and presumably the changes in TPC will...
Cartridge suggestions for Rega 25
Can you handle a .3 mV MC cartridge? If so, you can get a Denon DL-103D, a classic of a few decades back, for $229, and it's NEW. Call Denon USA at 310-974-1010. Some fellow Audiogoner put me and others onto this, and I'm grateful to him. I'm usin...
MC Cartridge Suggestions?
I'm using a Denon DL 103-D, which they're still making after decades, and sellng for only $229, in a Rega 25, and I think it's the biggest steal in audio. Comparable to Koetsu Black but can you get them new these days? The only way to reach Denon ...
Are you a D.I.Y?
I've posted this info many times, but new readers keep coming along so I'll do it once again. I have plans for RPG-style diffusors (three kinds), Argent Room Lens clones, and now a really cheap fairly good isolation platform, and more advice than ...
Why no threads on OTL amps?
Let me join Siddh in praise of Atma-Sphere OTL's, neglected in most of this thread. I'm using a pair of M60 II.2's with half their output tubes removed, with Quad ESL 63's, whose impedance drops as low as 4 ohms though is mostly closer to 7. The p...
Best sound-using passive or active pre-amp?
If EVS attenuators are convenient enough for you, I don't think you can go wrong with them. On degrading the sound, I used to use a CAT SL-1 III with factory-simplified signal path, and it was SO much less transparent that a DIY passive using Shal...
Where can good Nakamichi cassette service be had?
Thanks C123666, Weiserb and Maxgain! I knew I could count on the good Audiogon Forum participants. My question pertains to an "as is" 1000XZL I sold, and I've recommended to the buyer that he pursue all these leads. It's very nice that people are ...
Malfunctioning Anthem Pre 1
Unfortunately, you can't call Sonic Frontiers since they're out of business. The Parts Connection is apparently starting up again, though. Try www.partsconnexion.com, and note the spelling. They listed a phone number that's no good--yet? They said...
Parts Connection - Now where do I find parts?
Brf is right. The new Parts Connection, spelled Connexion, is headed by Chris Johnson, founder and CEO of Sonic Frontiers. I've heard that Paradigm purchased Sonic Frontiers but is planning to make mostly HT components.
Help with NEW MC cartridge putchase
I enthusiastically recommend the Denon DL 103D, a classic of yesterday that they're still making or making again. I'm grateful to someone on this Forum who put me onto it, as I had one decades ago and just got a new one and am delighted with it. O...
Interconnects recommendation for passive preamp?
I'm using Stealth PGS with mine, expensive but great in my system, and have used Stealth silver ribbon (whatever the precise name). Both were 8' long and both worked with amps (Pass Aleph 3's used as monoblocks) with input impedance of 23K ohms, l...
Best all-around cartridge for 500.00 new
A fellow Audiogonian told me that Denon DL 103D's, a classic of yesteryear, are still available, and at only $229 plus $5 shipping. I had one decades ago and loved it, but of course your phono stage would have to work with a roughly .3mv MC. If yo...
please help a rookie
I'd buy F. Alton Everest's "Sound Studio Construction on a Budget" and learn what your room needs. A modest system in a well-treated room will usually sound better, be a lot less fatiguing, than a high end system in an acoustic nightmare of a room...
