Woofer thump when preamp comes out of standby
I agree that preamp should be turned on before the final. If you do it that way, there is no thump, right? Some preamps output a wave when their power rises, then settle back to normal. There is such a thing as a no-thump circuit, but some preamps...
Surge protection.... Or not
Surge protection is required for keeping incoming high voltage spikes from wiping out your equipment. Having something beefy at the mains is a good idea, and in most areas you can pay a small monthly fee for the power company to install one and ma...
The end of pono?
Edison was not a scientist, or all that good of an engineer. He had no formal training, so he stumbled around in the design process a lot. When he would realize that he couldn't do what needed to be done, he went out and tried to find scientists a...
Should I repair my amp?
From what I have heard, the price for repair is a number that covers the worst case scenario of what could be wrong. That way they can give you a flat price and always come out ahead. The up side to that method is there is no quibbling over the re...
Beware How I was ripped off
This thread has just given me the willies. A friend of mine wants me to get rid of a closet full of his old equipment. Since it is "up scale" stuff, it seems the only way to get a decent price for it is through the web. But these stories are scari...
What is the best type of preamp for a class D amp?
Class D is a modern technique for reducing power requirements of the power amp and supply for the power amp. It isn't used for preamps because preamps don't need those features. Preamps are class A.
Hum in one speaker?
I think your problem is schmutz and not a cap. I mentioned the common cap problem because the symptoms are similar. I wanted other people who are reading this to know how to tell power supply hum from pickup hum. When the noise is coming from picku...
Speaker buzz with SS amplifier, input disconnected
What I meant about moving it to another room was to see if a different AC branch of power or if a different electromagnetic environment caused a change. You should check everything before going through the hassle and cost of sending it back. Also ...
Fake Audiophiles
About modern electronics...When it comes to amplifier design, the Holy Grail is to have the new amplifiers perform as well as the old class A amps. The ultimate in fidelity is when you run the amps class A, but the design drawback is that they are...
Speaker buzz with SS amplifier, input disconnected
Did these amps have this problem from day one, or is this recent?Do you have any other equipment near the amps that is on?Do you have florescent lighting or light dimmers? If you swap the physical position of the left and right amps, does the great...
Speaker buzz with SS amplifier, input disconnected
Like Arh is asking above, is this a really bad hum/noise or is this just the tiny hum you might get from a floating input? When 60 Hz hum becomes really bad, it can create a buzzing hum. The 60 Hz wave is so strong that it clips off at the peaks an...
is there an audiophile war going on
I'm an electrical design engineer and all I can say is that the instruments we use for testing for spectral "flatness" are not the same analysis instruments that you are using when you play you equipment (your ears). The instruments help work out ...
Hum in one speaker?
Sometimes cables fresh from the factory are the worst for schmutz. There can be like this oil stuff on the connector, that is a residue from the manufacturing process. And what is worst is when you have the oil get from the jack into the socket, be...
Audiophile Fakery
"Tom32 I didn't mean to imply that frequency contouring was easy to do"Yes, Tom32 wasn't real clear about his point, but to clarify... =-}Speaker design is very tricky, and goes beyond standard engineering and science and into the world of the bla...
Hum in one speaker?
Sounds like you had some schmutz on your connection. One of the symptoms will be that you will pick up more noise (including hum), and another symptom is that it will be sensitive to vibration (tapping on it makes it cut in and out). The schmutz ca...
