How competitive are you with your system?
"The only bragging rights would be for "how much was spent" which is at least objective, but does not say much else about the sound."   That would depend on your crowd.  Those at AK typically take the opposite approach..., i.e., "how little was ...
So What Let's My "Mermans" Sing?
Total investment in the speakers is ~$1,500. Speakers were purchased used and components were sourced on eBay. The 18’s were in the ~6.5 cu ft JBL "clone" cabinets and purchased from a church for $650/pr.   The 10s were from eBay @$135/pr and...
What exactly is critical listening? Who does it?
I always listen critically because I want to know what the system is doing well, what could use improvement, and maybe most importantly, what the engineer is trying to convey (and maybe not convey?). I want to hear all those small changes that wo...
So What Let's My "Mermans" Sing?
BTW, I am in Orange County, CA and anyone is welcome to come by and hear this for themselves.  I’ve been to T.H.E. Show, and there wasn’t anything that imaged like this AND could play rock music at realistic levels putting the show right there in ...
So What Let's My "Mermans" Sing?
This disk will put sounds all around and behind you.  The soundstage and imaging are unbelievable, even with your eyes open and there is no sense of speakers in the room! https://youtu.be/KCGqlET-OP4 BTW, the room has no treatment at all and I u...
Why not the piano as a reference for bass
As to the Doors, I would hope that one's system allows them to differentiate the sound of a bass guitar..., https://youtu.be/ptA39Awo0FE and a Rhodes Piano bass..., https://youtu.be/nOJSmXSFCWk It should also be obvious as to whether Ray is pl...
Why not the piano as a reference for bass
Played clarinet from 5th through 12th and keyboards in a garage band in the late 60s early 70s. Had equipment to die for back then (Hammond, Hohner, Vox, Farfisa, Moog and EML synths), but sold it off to pay for college.    Another thought on t...
Why not the piano as a reference for bass
Actually, no..., Ray played a Fender Rhodes Piano Bass with his left hand.  He never played pedals. In several of their tracks, he is overdubbed by a bass guitar. https://youtu.be/Fiq9VDkGVnI
Have some fun with bookshelf monitors!!
Tell it to the BBC.
Why not the piano as a reference for bass
I think that the "attack" has a lot to do with it.  Whereas a bass is "plucked" by hand or played with a pick, a piano is struck with a felt-covered hammer and this presents a completely different "leading edge."
Have some fun with bookshelf monitors!!
LS3/5a's. They are the "reference standard."
What decibel level do you listen at? What is ideal?
What would be ideal is if one were to listen at the same level that the engineer was listening at when he downmixed the track.  Then one would be subject to the same F-M curve and perceive the bass and treble in a similar context. For some music,...
How good is the crossover in your loudspeakers?
On an Lpad, there are two floating wipers, but only one is shown in the schematics.  We are using the other and it goes from ~11 to ~36 ohms before it opens completely.  The circuit works best above ~18 ohms, hence R2, with ~20 ohms being near opt...
How good is the crossover in your loudspeakers?
How good are my crossovers?  There are probably no others in the world that function as these do using these components and the parts selection has taken years of tweaking.   Caps were mixed for there "particular sound" and multiple values were ...
What is nearfield listening?
If your computer has a monitor system, chances are that you are already engaged in nearfield listening whenever you hear something on it.
