People That Have Upgraded From Harbeth 30.1s....
04-21-2019 3:52amUpdate: I just spent a week with ATC SCM19 v2s in the house and I can say that for me, they aren't even close to the 30.1s. Very sterile, way more "pro" sounding than I expected. Really no sense of musicians playing in a room with...
Benchmark Preamps and Amp - For real?
I have the HPA4 which replaced the Bryston BP26 in my system (driving the Benchmark AHB2 amp). I found the HPA4 more transparent than the BP26.Have used the HPA4 to drive a pair of AHB2 amps in mono mode - super clarity and reveals the best in mus...
Recommendation for detailed/analytical bookshelf speaker?
Agree @admranger though in case anyone gets the wrong impression, I never found the 19mk2s ruthless in any way - far from it. Revealing and neutral, yes. I came from over 12yrs with various Harbeth models, also fine speakers, which I found more ov...
Recommendation for detailed/analytical bookshelf speaker?
I really like the ATC 19 though you'll need a sturdy 100+ watt amp to get the best from them. Beautiful clarity/detail/refinement but also dynamic and authoritative.  Can play any type of music.
Speaker recommendation thread (Organised by tiers of price)
Since everyones taste is different this list will keep expanding until it encompasses most every speaker of reasonable performance made. Not sure how useful this will be to anyone(?).
Tone, Tone, Tone !
I agree tone rules. Who cares what else a speaker can do if it doesn't sound tonally realistic?I've owned a string of British box speakers over the last 30yrs - a pair of 3-way Heybooks, 3 pairs of Proacs, 3 pairs of Harbeths and now 2 pairs of AT...
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
Sorry @mijostyn when you mentioned damping factor doubling and adding a resistor in the primary I thought you were taking the piss.
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
Yes exactly - personally I wouldn't go back to one amp. I just didn't want to create unreasonable expectation about the addition. I do think the improvements extend beyond merely providing more headroom. As long as you understand this is an increm...
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
@wwoodrum - only you can say whether you need more headroom with your room/speakers.My room size is similar to yours and my speaker sensitivity around the same - and truthfully a single AHB2 drove my ATC’s to high levels without issue. Nonetheless...
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
Why people find posting this sort of stuff amusing is beyond me. Yawn.
Benchmark AHB2 - To 'mono' or not to 'mono'
My first question was going to be whether you really need the extra power for your situation. It seems you may not.JA at Stereophile measured the Pulsar’s sensitivity at 83.5dB(B)/2.83V/m, which is quite low, so certainly some situations/program m...
Seeking advice on several specific MC Step Up Transformers
I'm been using a Cary PH302 for about 7yrs and like you I found external SUT's into the MM stage to work better with the cartridges I used (lower output MC's).I've tried Bob Sattin's 3440A, Hashimoto HM7 and Lundahl 1941. The first two were 1:15/1...
Opinion on SME 15
@tobes  A ’rumble filter’ doesn’t help?FWIW I wouldn't use one because I think the cure is worse than the problem. I don't think they should be required with any high quality turntable, more for your cheap decks where SQ is not paramount. Here's on...
Opinion on SME 15
Just to be clear I don't have any noticeable rumble from my current TNT. It's not intrusive at all in terms of noise.Having said that, I'd  expect the SME would would drop noise levels even lower - given that it's  bearing rivals even top notch ai...
Opinion on SME 15
Thanks for the input. SME engineering is certainly a draw card for me. In the test results accompanying the HiFi News review of the SME15, the measured rumble for the 15 "bests the TechDAS Air Force Two by a very small margin" (the rumble test res...
