2017 vs. 1990s - How far we have come
The ear by nature is a strong and manipulable filter. It can editorialize on the fly and learn long term methods/ways better than just about any form of hardware we can imagine or realize. The same goes for learning the differences between one amp ...
PREAMP technology shift? - Class A/ balanced/ dual-mono/ zero feedback vs. op-amp preamps
They already are.the problem for me, is that they tend to be very ’mono’ in their dynamic expression. Meaning the dynamic expression is very one note or one singular expression of dynamics.Pinched, is another word to describe their sound qualities...
Silly prices for Nordost cables
If you reduced the Hubble telescope to it’s raw costs in elements (trace percentage analysis), it’s probably not over $100k in value, most likely no more than $20k. Probably even less. The given $1.2M Lamborghini is worse..probably not worth more ...
Man this is frustrating
Whatever cable you buy that is brand new and for the turntable to phono preamp, try to find a way to burn it in elsewhere with regular 500mv-2v rms signals. Tiny phono signals will never burn an audio cable in. never in this lifetime. This means a...
Newest Aqusition, McIntosh MA6600 Integrated
Last time I was there, was about 15-17 years ago.I was brought in to evaluate potential purchases for a guy.By the time we walked out, half a day later, he had made a deal ...and purchased about 20 pieces. All on my advice or estimation. Crazy day...
Dr. Feickert Protractor
Vinyl engine has lots of printable protractors, and using a few of them to cross reference the results, can be quite useful. The more common trick is to print the protractor and glue it to a piece of cardboard, for a more functional paper protracto...
2017 vs. 1990s - How far we have come
I think of class d in the same way, it’s in the dancing bear stage like CD was in the early 90’s.It’s amazing we can figure out that the motions of the bear are likened to dancing of a sort.but ...the bear dances very very badly. Fidelity? Peak fi...
Need to replace damaged binding posts on B&K Reference 200.7 amp
took some searching but found them:http://www.cliffuk.co.uk/products/terminals/touchproof.htmMCM, farnell, newark, amazon and so on, re availability.
2017 vs. 1990s - How far we have come
IMO and IME, the equipment is brick walled and going in circles, with many a misstep along the way.Subtle changes upward, yes, but overall, it’s always been there, fully available in the parts quality costs. Modern times... has wreaked havoc in th...
Channel Imbalance at low volumes
Impossible to say. Unless it is a full proper rebuild, which might cost $200+, then it's all going to be crutches of a sort (good crutches, bad crutches)....and the lifespan of the amp will be what the clock says when it finally fails. This is the ...
Need to replace damaged binding posts on B&K Reference 200.7 amp
Not a common design, which was a bad choice, unless the company planned to be around for along time and had a large supply. They are probably going to have to be pulled from another dead amp which may have used the same ones.Got a tickle in me brai...
PREAMP technology shift? - Class A/ balanced/ dual-mono/ zero feedback vs. op-amp preamps
you can always spend a bit fixing up the pro 10mc, refreshing its capacitors with newer higher spec ones (minimally...all the old electrolytics have to go)..and then look at changing the opamps in it to higher spec newer designs.this is the least ...
Channel Imbalance at low volumes
It can be dried out off brand capacitors, dirty relays, dirty pots, dirty switches, and so on.the unit is from 1986, and was made in Taiwan with off brand capacitors. It’s old and it’s tired. It needs a cleaning, check out, new capacitors on many sp...
How critical is Mosfet matching in power amp output stages?
Matching tends to count most when you edge toward high levels of output and the stressing through massive transients in a mixed harmonic, well, the micro distortions become macro and then you pop an output transistor or two.In the rest of the give...
Are future improvements in Amp/PreAmps slowing to a crawl?
The problem is that the best you can experience, or record, is a subtle loss of transient function, so... likened to a master tape copy.. slightly darker, slightly duller, slightly slower. light recording has the same issues, or of a similar type ...
