Supporting Local Audio Stores are we?
I happen to think that higher-end sports and/or luxury cars are a very valid comparison to high end audio. Manufacturers lure you with great perceived "build-quality", fancy chassis, great sound sometimes, and dealers are occasionally snooty to mo...
Whic CD player would you pick and why
Lysaker, I have no info or opinion on the Linn. There are so many DACs out there (and so many flavors that people like) that I would recommend spending a bit of time digging around in the archives here and over at Audioasylum.
NO CES Updates???
Apparently, CES attendance by mfrs is down 10% and on Day1, visitor attendance was down about 8-10% from last year, and that was considered something of a success.
Whic CD player would you pick and why
Lysaker, I second Macdadtexas' idea. I believe the future of digital is not on external media. For $6500, I would buy a dedicated PC with extra drive, rip all my CDs (and/or pay someone to do it), and then buy a great DAC with an extremely well-im...
Linear Tracking Turntables
Somewhat OT... I recently acquired another early-1980s Japanese linear-tracking flagship - the Diatone LT-1 - and spent part of the Christmas-to-New-Year's period listening to it. Very nice and stable sound. I had a Denon 103R and an older Lukasch...
Linear Tracking Turntables
Audiogent, I too would like the contact, just in case it comes in handy sometime down the line... I actually have a couple of scrappy-looking PX-2s waiting in the wings as "working parts bins" just in case but I could use the contact...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
04rdking, bless your heart. Happy holidays to all.
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
Jloveys, I can only hope that my idler project, which awaits in the everlasting projecthood limbo, will perform as well as your 124 once completed. I now have a second project also awaiting, and a stock Diatone LT-1 to play with over the holidays....
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
And coincidence of coincidences, I just missed on a Sony PS-X9 which was up for auction... wonder when I am going to see one of those again...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
The common comparison being made in this thread by people who are fans of "vintage" TTs is that AFTER new plinths, modern isolation platforms, ensuring the bearing is OK (and sometimes putting a new bearing in), adding a modern state of the art ar...
Telephones for Audiophiles?
LOL, Thanks Rubber, for bringing us back to reality...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
Thermonicavenger, I have to disagree on why most TT mfrs go for belt drive - it certainly isn't to make it rich selling belts. And when Technics was selling its SP-10Mk2 in 1975 for 250k yen (the average monthly salary for the household head in th...
Reason for buying old/classic turntables
FWIW, I find that the flagship direct-drive TTs of Japan in the late 1970s and early 1980s are really quite good. I have one which I enjoy quite a bit. However, they are from being the same. Some of them were relatively light, with very high-torqu...
Who was your first
Dave Brubeck was the first jazz I heard on my parents' stereo. It was the only jazz album they had as far as I know. I must have played the record (Time Out) 5 times the first day I heard it, and that many times a day for the next week. Guess I br...
A spousal revelation ... and a tall order. Help
The Altec M19s are "big" in size and in sound. I bought mine for about $1200 and I have never seen or heard a pair of speakers, new or used, that I would rather have for the money (given my choice of amps on this system, which is low-power tubes)....
