What would be the best "attainable" Denon turntabl
I am not sure how to "match" a Denon TT to the AVR-5803A and DVD-5910 but if you are looking for the brand, the best quality for non-stratospheric prices are the highest numbers you can find under 100 (i.e. 80, 75, then lower), then the somewhere ...
Stand out phono stages
Steve, the C-17 is the other headamp I want to try. I'd love to find one but as you note, they are rare indeed.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
Eddie Costa's House of Blue Lights (I can't get over how much I LOVE the first track, and then the segue into the second)Hank Mobley (BN 1568)John Jenkins w/ Kenny Burrell (BN 1573)Lee Morgan's Candy (1590)J.R. Monterose (1536)Sonny Clark Trio (15...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Raul,I generally use the "ears" guide. I am fine with the distortions in my speakers. However, I am also interested in learning the science behind sound. So far I have not run into a case where I could change the capacitance upwards AND doing so s...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
I know that in the past certain manufacturers had a 'recommended' capacitance level but is there a case with an MM cart where MORE capacitance would be desirable than the minimum possible?
Good arms for catridge swappers
Mosin, the EPA-500 is a great suggestion. My only 'worry' on that arm was that to get three different levels of effective mass it starts to take serious bucks. I have seen the heavy sets go for high three digits. One can 'manipulate' effective mas...
What's the oldest piece of gear in your system?
Probably my Rek-O-Kut Rondine B-12H turntable (1956 I think), though I might have a tube which is older than that...
Good arms for catridge swappers
I tend to agree that the right armwand collet chuck is going to be better than the standard headshell mount. Finding a removable armwand arm which is not a unipivot might be a tough one (the Micro Seiki MA 505 Mk3 would work). That said, there are...
Thought on OTL tube amps
Ralph,If you would address speaker load, I for one would be interested. I can express my preconceptions but it would be better just to have the subject addressed in a broader way. I can say that I would love to try some OTLs on my speakers (four w...
unison research smart 845
Front-end disclosure: no experience with the C1s.That said... the Smart 845 only puts out 25W. I would think that is not nearly enough to drive an 86dB speaker, even if the impedance curve is relatively benign (i.e. at nominal 4 ohms - it appears ...
Who needs a MM cartridge type when we have MC?
Wayne,I do not have the experience with the "western" brand tonearms such as the Helius, Roksan, etc (even though they are probably made at the same factory as the Japanese tonearms). I have no experience with the JELCO arms. I like the long SME 3...
Anyone got and album database for iPhone?
If you have FileMakerPro on your Mac at home, you could add FileMakerGo which should do the job. I don't like Bento. There is something called Devonthink this is coming up for iPad but that is a giant database for everything, not a simple list-typ...
Audiophiles are older than dirt
Mapman, I LOVE those message tubes. I think they are SO cool. I have always wanted to buy an old building with pneumatic message tubes just to have them.
A major disconnect between the audiophile magazine
For the vast majority of today's home PC users, a 10-year old PC attached to an LCD monitor should do fine. For the vast majority of drivers looking to get excellent mileage with good reliability in a modicum of comfort on their way to work, they'd...
Audiophiles are older than dirt
Hotmailjbc,Is that the one with the hillbilly in raised glass? I remember seeing one of those in a diner once in Mississippi and getting served a bottle with the same guy on it but in red and white paint. I actually loved the old mountain dew; sup...
