Why Can't I Get The Right Sound? Krell pre + PSB's
I also support the theory that you may need to address the room first. However, I think that your amp is underpowered for the Gold's. To get the most out of the PSB's bass performance, try a very high-powered amp. Michael
New integrated for Totem
The best bang for the buck integrated I've heard with the smaller Totems (such as Sttafs) is the Jolida 302b. This will work particularly well for your interest in Jazz and acoustic guitar. For SS options in your price range, consider a Plinius 810...
TV Selection: Two Questions
I agree that you will want at least a 52" TV. I have a viewing distance of about 8', and the 52" seems "about right". It could even be a little bigger and I would be perfectly happy. At 12' you won't want anything less than 52".Michael
Looking for a great el34 based amp
Cary V12.Michael
Circuit Status
Two dedicated circuits are ideal, although you have to keep in mind the possibility of a ground loop issue. You'll need to use at least 12 ga wire if you want to have the capacity for 20A, which is what I would recommend.Michael
Sources for uncompressed downloads
Magnatune.com lets you download in WAV and FLAC as well as MP3.Michael
Which makes the bigger difference?
For soundstaging, I think the most important components are the speakers and the room, and the positioning of speakers within the room. Next is probably the amplification (preamp + amp), and the associated SS vs tubes differences. The CDP will als...
Looking for integrated w/ good dynamics kick
Try the Plinius 8200, or an older Musical Fidelity integrated such as the A308cr or A3.2cr. The Portal Panache gets good press, although I haven't heard one.Michael
Plug n' Play, ahead of squeezing that last 1 ?
Based on your description, you might like a Musical Fidelity A308cr or Classe CAP-151.Michael
Squeezebox, USB to S/PDIF conv, or soundcard?
Since you're running Linux, you can simplify your life and just get another Squeezebox. That way you can use the same Squeezecenter server software and it makes it pretty slick for having multiple SB's. (I use 2 of them, personally.) I think you'l...
Reputable dealers?
"Superb selection, great service, and no attitude." Are you kidding me?! I have my personal opinions of Dave and his store, but I think that you'll be better served by some of the other shops, such as the ones I mentioned before.Maybe Joe will chi...
Reputable dealers?
The Stereo Trading Outlet, Community Audio, and Quest for Sound are three of the better dealers in the area.Michael
HDMI Terms and Troubles...
It's hard to answer your questions without a little more information. Are you using a Sony receiver to try to decode the new Blu-ray high resolution audio formats (such as dtsHD), or are you trying to have it process a Dolby Digital or dts audio st...
Integrated with very good phono???
I'd suggest the Plinius 8100, although with the Arro's I like tube integrateds as well. Consider also getting a $700 integrated and a separate $300 phono stage. That might at least match the performance of a $1000 integrated that includes phono, b...
Good Place for Classical CDs
I second amazon.com. It's a great resource.Michael
