Best Solid State Amp For 10k Or Less
Hi John! I'm using Red Dawn throughout: 1m RCA Rotel 855/AlephP, 4.5m XLR between P and 2 monos, and 2.5m revII to Verity Encores. Spectral balance is great, but top octaves "clicky" and gritty, probably due to the Rotel. I was surprised to find t...

"Burn in" Are you serious?
After stumbling upon their great concert a few weeks back, I recently bought some CDs of THE BURN SISTERS, a trio of folk/rock/country/blues genre-bending crooners who spout forth 3 part harmony with genetically-coded ease so satisfying that my wi...
Best Solid State Amp For 10k Or Less
I'm pretty darned happy with my Pass Aleph P and mono 2s setup. Great soundstaging, dead quiet, natural midrange, forgiving yet detailed, and ultrareliable; fun-to-use remote, too! Should net out around $5-5.5k used. GREAT synergy between pre and ...
Older CD players vs current ones?
I'm baffled that several Rotel dealers (apparently even a factory rep employee) admitted that the old 855 sounds better than the recent 951, 971 series! What's going on here? I understand the newer transport's cheaper-Asian, but aren't newer DACS ...
Shelf Material - Neuance
Greetings, Mark. I bought a Neuance shelf, but embarrassingly have not taken the time to A/B it yet. I simply "stored" it on TOP of my Rotel CDP (which sits on an air bladder for now), not thinking much about it. Subsequent listening sessions soun...
Shelf Material
I bought a Neuance shelf, but have been too lazy to install it, so simply "stored" it on TOP of my Rotel CDP (which sits on an inner tube). I'll be damned if the top octave isn't cleaner!! Okay...no controlled A/B yet, but this appears to be a rem...
The best Cdp that have volume control
...too "mesmerized" to comment!
Audio refinement complete amp.
The amp is amazingly good for the bucks. The CDP is smooth, but a bit clod-footed compared to others at its price (Rotel, etc). The tuner, however, is unbelievably good, and rarely opined upon. Buy the amp IF it can drive your speakers...the 60w/c...
Replacing my tweeters a good idea?
Shabbaddoo (sp?). Got an extra pair of 2 ohm resistors I'll mail ya for free. If the treble drops a little too much just use them both in parallel to get 1 ohm, and then buy another one at Radio Shack. Send me your address, and I'll pop 'em in the...
Digital Modeling of Sonic Signatures
Hi onhwy. I started a thread recently on Digital EQ, and NO ONE responded! Apparently there are available 24 bit digital-domain pro EQs that, depending upon the type, either allow you to take a digital signal and play with it (hopefully transparen...
granite base for speakers
...reread your original post, and wanted to add that the 4" change in VLA completely swamps any effects of power cord changes (esp the "hardening" of the mids). The "diminished" bass is due to the change in woofer height from the floor creating a ...
granite base for speakers
Great posts! I used 4" slabs of white marble (broken gravestones used as landfill adjacent a quarry near Rutland, VT!) under stands to lift my older two-ways to proper height. (Didn't "deaden" the sound, either!) The increased rez from the bases w...
CDP isolation platforms
Check out recent threads on shelf material and CDP isolation.... I'm about to compare Caterham's Neuance isolation shelf ($145) to my air bladder (8" wheel-barrow type is small enough in diameter, but large enough in bore to not require an MDF pla...
Add a DAC or buy a new CD player?
Thanks for the tip, Doug, but I'm way too concerned about compromising the Aleph's superb synergy with my Aleph 2s to try that Muse. I tend to agree with Sam that I (and the thread-head) should concentrate on cleaning up the front end; I'm about t...
