Patricia Barber and Stereophile
After our guests left last night I rang in the early morning millenium with Companion and then nightclub. Percussion miking is contrived on both discs, but not disagreeably to me. The effect is simply like having TWO percussionists, no? And was it...
Best Sounding Passive Preamp
Find Brad at Virtual Mode in Connecticut. Extremely well-regarded inexpensive passive preamps.
What CD is your System Reference
After pondering a bunch of my usual references, I gotta laugh and tell you the best jaw-drops I get from most folks follow playing cuts 5 and 8 (Ladysmith) of Paul Simon's Graceland! Most people have never heard/seen the soundstage produced, and t...
Bad room, bad tunes
Nice response, Audiopath, but I too question whether the Hales aren't just too damned big for the room? 6.5 or even 5" two-ways would suffice here, no? And if your calculations show THAT big a 100 Hz bump wouldn't even something truly anemic but m...
CD player:Arcam 9 or Rotel 991
Found the ARCAM 9 delightfully detailed and full-bodied, too, but quite lacking in pace and rythmn compared to my old Rotel 855. OTOH Rotel dealers (and the factory service rep!) claim these old Rotels sound better than the newer 9 series...althou...
Best Zip Code for Perfect Life
02156: 2 minute walk to lake, 4 minutes to great Italian restaurant at town center, with 12 minute rail/20 minute drive to Boston's Symphony and/or Jordan Halls (though parking's a bitch!). 10 minute walk to newly-"hot" town center. Great solid Am...
Tinnitus anyone?
I'm on moderate levels of NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory) drugs--you know, aspirin, naprosyn, ibuprofen, for psoriatic arthritis, and have several 1-2 minute episodes of mild tinnitus each day. I suspect that caffeine AND NSAIDS together ...
Best Bach Toccatta and Fugue in D Minor
My 1969 performance (as a seventeen-yr-old) on a Casavant Freres 4-rank French Canadian organ in the St Jean-de-Baptiste Church in Central Falls, Rhode Island. I even got through the final runs with nary a slip, and was shaking afterwards. I don't...
Your Best Hobbies (other than Audio)
I too was an amateur "ham" as a kid in the 60s, and a wunder-kid baroque organist. Now I'm in a more romantic period with my lovingly-restored (and FINALLY broken in--takes TWO YEARS to burn in the new Swedish steel strings...that's why most rebui...
Speaker Suggestions?/Advice Needed.
I really liked the sound of the Revel F50 (esp the midrange). If you can handle their cartoony looks (my wife couldn't!) check 'em out. Far more natural than Nautilus 804 or Thiel 2.3, IMO. Good Luck
Speaker Enclosures
Medium Density Fiberboard...good 'n cheap...and perfect for amateur efforts. Do you know what granite is going to do to your carbide (assuming you bought the best) drill bits and router bits? Stick with the easy materials...you'll have enough to w...
Best "Bookshelves" for $500? new or used
Interesting response, Sugarbie. Perhaps the 601 S2 tweeter isn't rolled off, but upon cursory listening I felt it was pretty hot in the mid-treble on axis (just like the Nautilus 803 and 804), and I wonder if that sibilance-crisping is what's both...
Favorite Christmas Song & Album.
I've been listening to The Burns Sisters' "Tradition" holiday CD. GREAT 3-part harmony on some original and traditional Xmas, Hanukkah and wintry stuff. Happy Holidays, all.
Power cords for Aleph amps
T-squared: how were the transients affected by the power cord mod? I too have Aleph 2 monos (driven by Aleph P), strung with Red Dawn, and if anything, the transients seem exagerated ("clicky"?). Did the Discoveries smooth that, or increase your p...
THE BEST SMALL SPEAKERS
Castle "Isis" (discontinued) continue to be the favorite of a local Castle dealer. I don't know if you'll ever find a used pair of Verity Audio Encore "Monitor" satellites (these are the top 1/2 of the Encores), but they have the best midrange of ...
