Voltage conversion from 220V to 110V.
El...tingle? I remember working on an old ( tuber back as a teen in the mid sixties, dutifully keeping one arm behind my back to ensure not closing a loop. Two hours later I woke up 10 feet away on the floor, with a bump on my head.Later I noticed...
small room speakers
If you listen in the VERY nearfield than indeed give the Quads a try, as they'll stay relatively coherent as you shift around. Avoid any monitor with widely-spaced drivers, and even perhaps metal domes, although that's perhaps too strong a general...
Hi-Fi test
Dunno, but maybe "Elements of Style" by Strunk is available on Redbook?
Correlation: Money and Good Sound
Get the phase correct on that keyboard, eh?
Home brew cleaning solution
For what?
Monitors:JM Lab, Proac, Revel, Soliloquy or Totem?
I like the Spendors' forgiving qualities for HT. The discontinued SC3 is a phenomenal center speaker, being a ported S3 with 2 midwoofs. I use one in between a pair of S3/1P 6.5 two-ways for a completely seamless front trio, as their sensitivities...
"I am there" vs. "They are here"
Yeah but then I'd feel compelled to shave and smell good.
Differences between small vs. large mid driver
El, 600Hz? That's over an octave above "middle" C on the piano! Most mids that cross that high have coherence problems, especially obvious with the human voice. And asking a "big" woofer (8+) to work cleanly at least an octave past there is pretty...
"I am there" vs. "They are here"
I have a 7' Steinway B sitting behind my speaker plane, set as a 7.5' nearfield triangle. Whereas "I'm there" somewhat often with orchestral sources, all too often pianists (and their jazz trios) "are here". I can even jiggle with my separate Pass...
Aerial 10T Beware
Aeriel had a really hard time getting their local box-maker to make bass cabinet clones precisely enough, so finally gave up and sources them from Scandinavia. Hence another (large) contributant to the price jump.
Differences between small vs. large mid driver
Andy, it'd be easy to write a book about this, and I'm 2-finger typer on a damned French keyboard on vacation in Grenoble, so I gotta keep it short...plus I'm not the expert here.Driver diameter is chosen to balance many needs. Generally, the larg...
Electrical Safety Tip
And a visit from the dyslexia diagnosis patrol!
Sagging power cable at IEC outlet - any remedies?
I've tested several batches of Schurter and Wattgate IEC320s. The Wattgates have an average separation force of 16 pounds; the Schurter only 4 lbs. I use the Schurter for lighter-weight PCs for source components, but the WattGates for heavier PCs ...
Power Cord Burn-In
PC burn-in is more a function of insulative dielectric potential stabilization (oh brother). Cheap PCs using nylon or PVC insulation have more "curing" to do than those using air or fluorocarbons. That said, curing can be done electrically or ther...
Does an aftermarket power cord matters for Amp?
Hi guys. Am vacationing around Grenoble, having wasted WAY too much time checking out euro PCs, and their guts at various sources. FINALLY found a good all-brass EC male AC plug I respect (even the 1k EURO siltech uses a chrome-plated male AC!), s...
