For Basis TT owners does the VPI SDS work?
I just bought a Basis 2001 that I will be using with my SDS.
Which letter is your favorite
A as long as it is scarlet. Actually it is probably S for Spendor, Stax, SME, Supex, Sumiko, It is too late at night for me to go on so I guess you could call this a half S'ed list.
Graham 2.2 or SME 309/IV/V
Mine is one upgraded from a 1.5, has both 1.5 and 2.2 decals, I'd give up a little rigidity for the sliding base. I also had a TNT series one when I had the IV.
Power Conditioner or Distributor?
Check out the Balanced Power Technology web site, I use two of their passive boxes. By starting with a cheaper power cord to wall and moving up later they would fit into your budget.
maple platform for tt.
I am also a dealer who uses a heavy maple platform under some of the non suspended tables he sells. I do not understand his concern. I have heard of Linn working well on a very light table but never that Regas did.
VPI Scoutmaster feet
What I use are the Star Sound Audio Points. They are threaded brass cones that screw in in place of the standard feet. They also make brass washers to use as spacers so that the cones remain in contact with the table when leveling the table. I hav...
Graham 2.2 or SME 309/IV/V
The 2.2 uses the SME cut out, I just bought one and it arrived today and I was reading the manual. I use to use the SME IV but have not set up the Graham so can't comment on sound. It also has the SME screw adjustment in which the arm moves to ali...
Inexpensive Cartridge for VPI Scout
I use Denon 110, actually slightly better than 160. Yogi comp on ebay had the 110 for $135 last I looked.
Can I use two preamps?
Just get an attenuator for one channel . this can be a fixed value or variable and insert it between the preamp and amp on the side you do not have hearing loss. A balance control.
Aluminum wiring
There is a benefit that your house will not burn down! You should get rid of that wiring ASAP. I remember being warned about such houses in the 70s, I didn't know there were any still around.
MC cart, can I use MM phono preamp?
No. I have a $2200 phono stage and have just bought one the cost $3500 in 2005 and none of my cartridges cost over $400. You can't hear a $1000 cartridge to advantage through a cheap phono stage. Try a Pro Ject Tube Box SE 11 or a Blue Circle basi...
Do you cover your towers?
Is it April 1st already? Undoubtably speakers that have been blanket covered will give a warmer sound.
biwire w/just one amp output?
If you want to do this it would be easier to open the back of the speaker and wire both to the same set of posts.
MC cart, can I use MM phono preamp?
Yes, but you will need to amplify the signal. Low output moving coils have 1/10 or less the output of typical MM ones. High output MCs are often usable directly into MM inputs. The Denon 110 is a good example available at a good price/performance ...
biwire w/just one amp output?
Use one better set of cables and GOOD jumpers, Cardas makes some that aren't too high but sound good. I find that wiring to the high end and jumping to the bass sounds better. Always did it the other way before, but try it both ways, they don't so...
