finding a solid state amp to replace a tube amp
I would look first at CJ SS amps, as they are products of the same design team. I use a CJ 350 myself and it is a great amp, although not cheap. But as noted above , tubes and SS have their own sound. If it is to be a back up why not try a differe...
Ortofon A90 with Graham Phantom
If I were experiencing this problem I would be tempted to place a small amount of Blutak between the top of the cartridge and the tonearm. This should both ensure a good bond and to a slight degree lessen the effect of arm resonances on the cartri...
Preamp for Quad 303 with Ls3/5a or Rega Elicit?
I doubt if anyone else has used this particular combination and even if they had they would not be hearing it with your ears. There is really no way to predict in advance ,with any degree of certainty, what any particular group of components will ...
What Step-up transformers are best value?
I just received my June Stereophile today and see that Art Dudley comments on the Bob's Devices SUT and says that it is very close to one costing 10X as much. He says"For the LP enthusiast who has yet to experience the superiority of a MC pickup c...
directional cables?
I don't want to argue the theory, I was just reporting the results of various experimenters. In the article "an Idiots Guide to Cables" in the Nov/Dec 2008 edition of HIFICRITIC Chris Bell describes a series of experiments he performed with variou...
directional cables?
All cables are "directional" meaning that due to variations in the plug quality, soldering and/crimping etc. they will probably sound different when reversed. Usually this difference in inaudible or minute in scale. As I suggested even ones design...
Sub Question
There is a widespread school of thought that I subscribe to that it is better to run the main speakers full range rather than use a crossover. If you do use one it is better to insert a passive attenuation one in the signal going to the main speak...

directional cables?
I would reverse them every day, that will keep those lazy electrons on their toes! Seriously, Bill is correct, that is how the manufacture intended them to be used. But if you happened to like them the other way the polarity police will not be kno...
Accuphase E-211? Any good? Sold in the US?
While a perfect SS amp would double its power every time the impedance is halved this requires a massive power supply, something like the big Krells or my CJ 350 or MF NuVista M3. My Meridian 605s, although very good amps which cost $3500 a pair i...
Ayon Triton- Anyone compared to high end seperates
My friend has an Ayon integrated, I will suggest that he answers himself more fully. His impression is that the amp section is better than the pre. Substituting a Magic hybrid for the pre gave an improvement and let him to get a passive which he n...
Accuphase E-211? Any good? Sold in the US?
The company has a very long record and its products tend to hold their value.
using high end speakers wit integrated recievers
It depends on the amp. The large Musical Fidelity ones, NuVista, TriVista, 500 and 550 would do a very good job. The Krell 300, the new one that retails for $2500, should also do a good job, it is surprisingly powerful. Gamut also makes some good ...
power cord or power conditioner?
I don't care for the power conditioners I have used; the top PS Audio is suppose to be good but I haven't tried it. A good power cord will help but dedicated lines are the best investment.
Is switching from B&W 805S to B&W CM9 a good idea?
The 805s are very good, better than the Rotel will ever show you. I personally would rather have the 805s than the 804s unless you have a very large room. I would rather add a REL or similar sub than go to 804s. If you really want to improve your ...
