How did U get into this expensive hobby?
My brother-in-law had a Garrard TT and some Fraiser midgets which were given to me. I loved music and was working at the AV department at the university while working on an EE degree. I needed an amp so my boss gave me the amp out of a motion pict...
How to get rid of transformer hum?
If it is a DC bias then a isolation transformer may help. If the isolation transformer wants to hum because of to high voltage then it may have a higher voltage tap you can try. You could also move the isolation transformer to the breaker panel. I...
new amp vs old amp
Ampzilla747, Isn't the thalia preamp you are looking to get made by GAS?I have a little experience with the brands you are comparing. I own a Dynaco 400 and have had a Aragon 8008BB in my system for a short while. The 400's front end has been modi...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
Liguy, I commented on the idea of "transmission line" theory applying to audio frequencys. I do not dispute the charterisic impedance of a cable even if it is only a centimeter in length. Do you happen to recall how long an IC would have to be to ...
Are Monoblock s worth it?
Sedond you are correct the speaker can not be bi-amped
Are Monoblock s worth it?
A while back I was at a friends and we had the opportunity to use a second Aragon 8008BB. One was left channel and the other right using only one channel in each amp. The resulting stagewas bigger and more focused. The music flowed with ease. Base...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
I know for a fact that cables can react with a system and have bad results. I watched on an oscilloscope an amplifier pruduce a beautiful 1.2 MHz sine wave when connected to some unusually high capacitance DIY cables similar to John Risch's design...
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
There are some DIY cables that can be made very cheap. I can find the site and post it if you like.
John Dunlavy On "Cable Nonsense"
Dunlavy talks about the transmission line properties of the cables he designs. I guess I have not forgotten as much as John Dunlavy because I clearly remember my Electrical Engineering professor saying that an audio cable would have to be many mil...
Speaker Recommenadations for Cary SLI-80
You should also consider thr Roman Audio speakers. They are very tube friendly with a smooth impedance and high sensitivity. They have the patented DiAurel circuit that is the latest thinking in x-over design.
Can’t believe anyone
My first buying experance was in 1972 at Pacific Stereo. I was getting a MUCH better system than the Fisher system I had given to me. The salesman talked me out of the smaller KLH's for some big honker cabinets with big woofers. They stayed in my ...
CD Recommendations
Frogman, I can relate. I have at times pull out a cd that I have not played in a couple of years and as I hear something new in it or just get mooved in a new way I say to myself why has it been this long.Lev, I also like the Rippingtons and I fee...

Music from my computer notebook - how?
I believe the best quality source is the CD ROM drive that comes in most laptops. If it has built in speakers it also has a sound card. I use mine with some HD600's and it is ok. I am sure an headphone amp would be better. - Chris

Yamski, I am new to this site but not new to audio. I make it a point to help the newbies. In answer to your quest for sites to learn, I suggest the following:This is an introduction to tubes:http://hem.passagen.se/sm0vpo/begin/tube0.htmThis is a ...
