Considering ditching 5.1 for a soundbar; suggestions? I'd never go with a soundbar if I had a decent home theater. What I did was put both on the same wall, wired the surround speakers where they are supposed to be, and set the 2 channel speakers to an optimum position. It worked great until I mo...
Integrityhifi TRU-GLIDER Pendulum Tonearm @drvinyl01 - Yes, although that comment pretty much applies to everything, right? A test drive means buying it, installing it, which also means cutting a new plinth, and then doing some listening. A very expensive approach if you decide you do...
Integrityhifi TRU-GLIDER Pendulum Tonearm @larryrs That is a good datapoint, thanks. I wonder how it sounds compared to a Kuzma 4 point?
cassettes CAN sound better than vinyl. I do agree that Nakamichi was the best cassette machine going back in the day. But I have never heard a cassette sounding better than a vinyl LP, even at Nakamichi dealers. Consequently, I gave up on cassettes long ago. I do agree that a liv...
Restoring vintage speakers This sounds like a too good of a deal, but I'll bite. If you are in the Bay Area of CA, send me a private note. I have a pair of KLH 30 speakers I am rebuilding into a pair of 12 inch subwoofers. Most of the veneer is fine, given the age, but ...
Fun With Cable Risers @tonywinga Very nice system photos! Looking at your DIY risers, did you experiment with not having parallel cables running so close together? Nice, out of the box thinking!
Cable Goop Review George is going to freak!! This thread has really gotten off topic but I did do some experiments with Noalox a number of years ago. We had a problem in an amplifier where the steel chassis ground connection was rusting after a year or two, causing a noise problem. I fo...
Question on Denon DL-103 retipping options and preferences I used Steve at VAS to repair a couple of tonearms for me and he did great work and rather quickly, too. I had a Denon 103D for a very long time until my wife's cat destroyed it. I really liked it although I was never too sure about the record w...
McIntosh MC275 VI preamp tubes I go to the Tube Store dot com and sort out what is available at an acceptable price. There is no correlation to price versus performance but there is a one to one correlation to perception of performance to price. So beware before you part wi...
Amp/Furman 15 pfi question. I'd run every thing from the Furman, the RMS currents of audio are very low, it is the crest factor that is huge. There is no way the crest factor will clip a 15 or 20 A grid supply. It might cause some havoc in your equipment, but that is a des...
What $ percentage goes into the turntable, the arm, preamp, and cartridge? @millercarbon It could just as easily be that there are more expensive carts because so many people have been misguided into thinking they matter so much that money is chasing carts instead of arms. This is so true - It started with Joe Grado b...
Unplug or ride out the storm? Just to add some salt to this topic, when lightening hits, you also get a EM Pulse that surges current and voltage in everything, whether it is unplugged or not. I'm not sure a lightening strike EMP will fry equipment close by though.
What $ percentage goes into the turntable, the arm, preamp, and cartridge? @millercarbon - So if one were to spend $3000 on a tonearm, then the guide says I should be looking at ~ $1000 cartridges. That seems a bit low for a cartridge and a bit high for a tonearm given today's pricing, given the TT is $3000 and the pre...
Best Way To Maximize Preamp Tube Life? I have worked with tube equipment for years, so I will toss in an opinion here. In general, you want them off, since they don't age in the off condition. When they are on, you are burning the cathode coating, which is the fundamental part of ...
Looking for a tube preamp with remote control. Take a look at Schiit Audio, they make a tube buffered unit with remote volume and switchable inputs. Put it in the tape monitor space on the CJ. More importantly, you still use your CJ as the main preamp. |
