Bookshelf speakers that renders 3D soundstage
I heard the Goldenear BRX at Axpona earlier this year. It sounded absolutely amazing and filled a largish room with sound. I think they were running on Parasound power too.
To truly enjoy this hobby, I need to learn electronics. Any book recs?
My local community college has a pretty strong electronics program that I am about 3/4 through - for me it is Macomb in Michigan. It was worth the time to really learn the stuff - not just the theories and math, but building stuff in the lab also....
Axpona 2022 what impressed you?
I thought the Elac room sounded pretty good for a hotel room - they brought Elac Concerto S507 - 7 driver small tower speakers. They hit all the notes, and sounded amazing down low with four 6.5" side firing drivers. And the Krell/Estalon combo wa...
Totally overwhelmed (speakers under $5k)
Axpona is still scheduled in Chicago in April. Go listen to some speakers before you buy. Good luck! -Geoff
What Is So Special About Harbeth?
I heard Harbeth speakers for the first time at Axpona in 2019. They were set up in one of the standard hotel rooms, and they flat out COMMANDED the room. I would say they were in the top five rooms I heard all day. It wasn't a particular character...
How to tame a bright system?
Tension - I use a Schiit Loki (the small one) to resolve the exact issue you are talking about. It runs in the processor loop on my receiver and is completely transparent. Only $150 too. If you get it and don't like it, I am looking for another on...
Can anyone recommend an FM Receiver that would play into a relatively high end system?
If you can find  a used McIntosh MR-88 they can pull HD radio as well as normal FM with the usual phenomenal tuner section from McIntosh. I think they can do XM too if you get a separate interface.Geoff

D'agostino amplifiers: where's the beef?
I heard a couple of the D'Agostino's running a giant pair of Magico speakers at Axpona in 2019. They were set up at the end of a deadend hallway surround on 2 sides by glass, and they made it sound like a live concert. It was one of the best sound...
Dayton Audio HTA100BT integrated
I bought the $30 Dayton speakers, then got a refurbish 25W amp from Monoprice for about $80 - similar to the Dayton but with less power. It was a gift for a friend but I set it up and listened to it. I thought for the money it was a pretty good va...
Integrated brand choice -- Simaudio, Hegel or Mark Levinson?
Did you look at McIntosh? You can get a nice one in that price range with an upgradeable DAC. Also, I have heard the Anthem STR and it is pretty amazing too especially with the built in room correction.-Geoff
Why are there so many wooden speakers?
Making the same speakers out of different materials and testing them would be poor engineering. Every time you change the material you change the material properties. Young's Modulus, density, and Poisson Ratio will be different, and so will the r...
Why are there so many wooden speakers?
I think it is incorrect to say that wood box speakers today are no different than 20 or 50 years ago. In the last 10 years or so, access to inexpensive but accurate CAE software has become available to speaker manufacturers, and now they can desig...
Legacy Aeris vs Tekton Ulfberht vs Triton Reference
You are pretty going to be best off with the most efficient speaker if you are sticking to the Prima Luna (which I don't see any reason not to). The Tektons you have are rated at a 99 dB efficiency, so if you look at a speaker that is even 96, it ...
Hard of Hearing Audiophile.
Thank you for sharing your experience Fred! I am in the same boat - no hearing aid yet, but I have mild tinnitus. I can't hear past around 14.5k Hz based on playing with a frequency generator in my electronics class last year. No idea down how I ...
