what do I upgrade?
I have to agree with the majority above - Dedicated circuits and power conditioning, as well as room acoustics. Addressing each link of the audio chain will maximize the potential of your components. If you do this and are then still not satisfied...
best Speakers Cables for Magnepan 3.6R ?
I have hot-rodded Magnepan 1.6QR's and have had excellent results with Tara Labs Air 2 speaker cables. I would love to have a pair of The One's, or even The 2's. :o)
Your First System
I bought my first system in 1975. A Marantz 2275 receiver, Marantz 6300 turntable with a Stanton 681EEE cartridge, and JBL 4311 speakers - I loved that system. I had a Technics DD turntable and Technics speakers before that, but only for a month o...
4 or 6 outlet conditoner for amps/sources
I have had excellent results with Richard Gray products - they won't limit dynamics and will protect against surges and spikes - a used 400 MkII should sell for under $600. I found however, that I needed several to isolate components and really ge...
BPT Power Conditioner
I haven't listened to the BPT 3.5 Signature, though it was highly recommended to me. I had already tried the Richard Gray products and found that they transformed my system, both on audio and video - I had to recalibrate my video monitor as well. ...
Using two out of three channels--bad for the amp?
It certainly won't hurt the amp by using only two out of the three available channels. As a safety concern though, just make sure that nothing comes in contact with the speaker binding posts. :o)
Looking for Bass....
I have 1.6's which I am driving with 400Wpc amps, and I find the bass to be very satisfying. I do have a sub which I use mostly for movies. It's a Velodyne HGS-15 which, though not as fast as the Maggies, still integrates well. You might also want...
Does anyone rember how to calculate impedance?
Parallel Load = (Load A x Load B)/(Load A + Load B)Series Load = Load A + Load B
Slew Rate?
Another spec closely related to slew rate, and usely more widely published, is bandwidth. Amplifiers with wider bandwidths are faster and equate to larger valued (faster) slew rate specs. An amplifier that can reach 100kHz is faster, and would hav...
What would be the weakest link in this setup
I think that all of the equipment you listed is an excellent starting point. Before replacing any of it I would heed Lak's recommendations. Every piece of the audio chain is important, and until you have experience with those "fancy accessories" a...
Please explain gain
Gain is a measure of the output signal divided by the input signal. It can be a ratio of output/input voltage, current, or power, depending upon the application. If the gains are not close when used for bi-amping, then the tweeter and midrange/woof...
Alternatives to Stoplight Pen RIP
Years ago (about 20) after hearing about painted edges improving the sound of CD's, I theorized that to work, such a marker would need to prevent the reflection of the 790nm laser light at the edge of the CD's in my CD player, either by absorbsion...
Cable TV receiver induced hum into system
Audio Advisor sells the Mondial Magic's. If you find that you need one, look under "Manufacturers" on their website for Mondial and you will find an isolation transformer and an isolation transformer/splitter. I used the transformer/splitter and s...
Cable TV receiver induced hum into system
I had the same problem with my cable hook-up, and I too used a Mondial Magic to break the ground loop and improve the picture. It's an excellent product! :o)
What 5ch or 3/2 to match Aragon 8008bb?
Kincade,I agree - I don't think you will notice anything by using an Acurus amp for the rear surrounds - the difference is fairly subtle. As far as heat is concerned, the 8008's and the Acurus are only warm to the touch after several hours of use d...
