List some of your favorite live Jazz recordings
Here’s mine. Mostly fusion and avant-garde. Don’t get me wrong, I love most of the post-bop recordings most of you are listing, too. I just didn’t want to be redundant listing them again. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Between Nothingness and Eternity (...
The Snob Appeal Premium
There seems to be a common mistake many people have with audio, and especially as it reaches the upper prices and echelon. I see many people say things like, "is a $20K speaker really worth twice that of a $10K speaker?". Well, no, if one is exp...
New In 2023
My list will be fairly obscure, with mostly progressive, experimental and avant-garde leaning bands and material.  So, YMMV... I will be back with even more. 2023 has started out pretty strongly for progressive genres of music (jazz, rock, clas...
George Winston has passed away
He was certainly a great player, even if he didn't play in a style that appealed to me.  RIP
Most amusing album or song titles
USA prog band, Happy the Man had a few song tittles that were amusing: Lunch at the Psychedelicatessen Knee Bitten Nymphs in Limbo I Forgot to Push It  - The band just got done playing an especially strong take of the song, but the recording en...
Most amusing album or song titles
The jazz fusion band, Brand X (with Phil Collins on Drums) had a few. Album title - Moroccan Roll Song titles: Why Should I Lend You Mine (When You've Broken Yours Off Already).. ...Maybe I'll Lend You Mine after All Algon (Where an Ordinary ...
Favorite Guitar Solo
@hifiguy42  Watermelon in  Easter Hay is transcendent indeed.  Another Zappa face melter is at the 2:00 mark on What's New In Baltimore on Meets the Mothers of Prevention.   Great picks! Here's one, for all you fusion fans. With Steve Smith...
What are your favorite songs or albums for illustrating a deep soundstage?
@pinwa   This is probably a bit grating and avant garde but I really liked the soundstage when I listened to it on my 20.7s last night. "Ozymandias" off the "Dystonia" album.   https://open.qobuz.com/track/209334759 Thanks for posting t...
Anyone else feel like they are “transported” INTO the music
Happens to me on a pretty constant basis. Not every listening session, but quite often. And even the listening sessions where it doesn't happen, are still extremely rewarding.  The vast majority of the music I listen to*, is not conducive to casu...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
And finally, I listened to, Arti e Mestieri - Tilt. This is a near brilliant piece of 70’s Italian prog! This one kind of straddles the line between prog and fusion. With terrifying chops by all members. For anyone unfamiliar, in the 70’s (and s...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
After the above mentioned Chamber Concerto, I listened to one of the great, lesser known ECM recordings. From 1976, Art Lande - Rubisa Patrol. With the great, Mark Isham on trumpet. Lande has some great feel on piano, but loads of chops too.
Whats on your turntable tonight?
This was from last night’s listening session. As with almost all of my listening sessions, they are a combination of vinyl and digital. Charles Wourinen (one of my top 5 composers)- Chamber Concerto for Cello and 10 Players, and Ringing Changes f...
Can the level of pleasure derived from music be measured?
@terry9 Far enough. I guess that may give it a bit of credibility. 😀👍
Can the level of pleasure derived from music be measured?
@terry9    Very difficult, unless you finesse the problem by tying your measurement to a known physical measure such as time. An anthropologist set up a boom box in a jungle and invited some villagers to come and listen. When he played Mozart,...
Can the level of pleasure derived from music be measured?
@frogman   Not entirely sure what you mean by “a true audiophile hierarchy” and why one would want to establish it. Having said that and since the question deals with audiophiles and “pleasure derived from music”, a simpler and more reliable t...
