Cables - When Did it All Start?
I don't remember who the first cable company was but my first high-end cable was a pair of speaker cable from Mark Levinson in the late 70's. The main design concern at that time was to minimize skin effect and resistance. So the Mark Levinson cab...
Tube Pre-amp Phono 60 Cycle Hum - Big Time
One possibility is that your phono amp is in close proximity of an electric magnetic device - a transformer for example, and is picking up hums from there. Please try to move the phono amp around to see if the situation improves.
Should I be concerned about overpowering my spkrs
Generally speaking, it is better to have more power then not enough because distortion caused by clipping can easily damage tweeters. On the other hand, you also need to be careful not over driving the speakers. If you sense a speaker is reaching ...
VTL MB-450 - Does isolation improve performance?
Before you spend $700 on a BDR why don't you try some HAL-O tube dampers first. They are cheap and might surprise you.
Aries upgrade to Aries 2 opinion needed
Rick,Maybe the upgrade is too new and not too many people are aware of it. I thought about the HR-X also but $10K is a bit too rich to my taste. With that much money, I think I might be able to get better improvement investing in other areas, perh...

Tracking Force for AKG P8ES
I consider it one of the best MM at that time and it was my favorite. It was very smooth sounding with a sweet and detailed mid-range, great for classical and jazz. I can’t say for sure how an 18 year old AKG will sound because I don’t have it any...
Martin Logan vs. Thiel
ML Ascents should not be missing sparkle on cymbols. What Classe amp and what speaker cable are you using?
Tracking Force for AKG P8ES
I had one 20 years ago. If my memory serves, I think I set it at between 1.1g and 1.2g. But if you have one that old, its suspension must have changed and I am not sure if that VTF still work.
Help please with AC line voltage problems......
I could be wrong here but I seem to remember the power supply for the driver tubes is regulated. If it is the case than the voltage frustrations should not matter.Does anyone have a schematic of the VT200 to confirm that?
What componant degrades the signal least/most?
I would say speaker and listening room contributed the most of the signal loss.
DirecTV access cards
Yes I had gotten new cards twice since 97. I don't know when the old ones expired for I usually put the new ones in immediately.
Headphone I can stand for more than 1 hour
How about Sennheiser HD580 or HD600.
A Shocking Experience
Discharging yourself by touching a grounded metal object can protect your equipment but you will still get shock when you do that. I suggest you apply anti-static treatment to your carpet. You can hire carpet cleaning service to do it for you or a...
