Tube preamp, Leave On Always or ON/OFF?
I have a BAT VK-50SE and I like to turn it off when not in use.The BAT has a soft start feature, which gradually increases the voltage to the tubes over a period of time (about a minute). It drastically reduces the stress on the tubes during power...
Balanced /Unbalanced Connection Help
Congratulations. The Casablanca is a nice piece of equipment. Do you have the user's manual? It describes the connections very well.It looks like you have the standard balanced DAC. A balanced output has two phases but a RCA single ended output ha...
Is table really more importsnt than cartridge?
Both of your examples are extreme mismatch. Playing a $2000 cart on a $200 table will not be acceptable. A $2000 cart will most likely be a mc or a high-end mm, they will require a precision arm and careful setup to sound good. A $200 table just d...
Eliminating jitter in a pc-based audio system
USB connection does not introduce jitter. I wouldn't worry about it.
Need some pre-amp advice...
Have you listened to any on your list? Personally, I like the BAT, but at this level, you got to listen to them yourselves. Don't buy base on what I like.
Reasonable tube phono stage for Oracle Alexandria?
Not sure how reasonable is reasonable to you. It will help if you could give a price range.
Best JBL's you have heard
JBL 4350.I heard it in 1978 or 79. Each side has two 15" woofers, a 12" mid-bass, a midrange horn, and a crystal tweeter. I don’t remember what amp was used but for the past 20 some years, I still have not found another speaker that can reproduce ...
Which of these would you buy?
The Energy Veritas are not that difficult to drive. I think 50W tube power should be enough; especially for a small room and near field listening. But there are more than just wattage when matching speaker with amp. I cannot tell you how they will...
Which of these would you buy?
6ft is too close for the Vandy 3. I would eliminate that.If you like forward, dynamic, and clear sound, you might want to add the Energy Veritas line to your short list.
very basic newbie question
Please follow the link below. It should answer most if not all your questions.http://www.vandenhul.com/artpap/phono_faq.htm
vandersteen Model 5 x-over for 2WQ functions
1. Correct. In your case, you should use the RCA version.2. The 6db lost is only meaningful if your power amp is truly balanced and has both RCA and XLR inputs. If your amp only has RCA input, there is no other way to connect it so you will never ...
Want to build my own equipment.
I don’t know why you want to do that. If you enjoy building things, that is fine. But it is very difficult to build something that can better the high-end commercial products.I was a DYIer in the 70s’ and 80s’ and I used to own an Audio Research S...
On the go.
Is MP3 good fidelity? As compared to what? If you compare it to a carefully engineered vinyl or master tape, the answer is no, there is no comparison whatsoever. But if you rip a CD to high bit rate MP3 file and compare the two, I would say at 256k...
To DAC or not to DAC
Using the MSB with the Miles does by-pass its internal DAC.
Center Channel for Martin Logan Aerius
If you don't need to decode any new 7.1 format, I suggest a used Yamaha DSP-A1. It is probably 5 or 6 year old technology but it is surprisingly good sounding, reliable, flexible, and easy to use. It was listed for $2,400 when new, you can probabl...
