Help- why do my Definitive Tech BP7001's sound Bad
Once more I find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with Duke...as usual he has hit the nail on the head.Speakers that radiate in a rearward pattern in the mid and high frequencies will produce a claustrophobic or cluttered sound when placed up agains...
What does Jitter sound like?
Shadorne - how do you think the data coming off the disk is stored in a buffer in the CD player without a PLL?I'll take a stab at what I think is going on and you please correct me - I much appreciate your efforts/time to educate me. I apolgise i...
Is this a reasonable Audiophile Mac-based Server?
Amazing all the conjecture against Wireless 802 system and in preference for USB.....IMHO both should sound indistinguishable provided you buy modestly good gear...after all none of this is rocket science...do we really suspect manufacurers are al...
What does Jitter sound like?
digital jitter seems to smear timing quite differently and more objectionably so. Having progressed through four generations of clock in my CDP I can say that most of what listeners think is synthetic & irritating about RBCD relates to jitter...
Is this a reasonable Audiophile Mac-based Server?
I use a wireless keyboard with roller ball mouse. I use my HDTV as a screen. (Mac Mini can output 720P with some slight mods to the software that controls the video card)But feel free to ignore this as I did quite a bit of programming for my setup...

However, inaccuracies in the pit locations on the CD or CD-R contribute to the PLL clock jitter in the CD player There is no PLL (Phase Lock Loop) used in a CD player unless it is getting its timing daisy chained down from some external device ra...

Shadorne - you are missing the point. I may have missed something but I think we agree apart from your claim "the positions of the pits in the CD are a form of timing information that can cause jitter as they are read", which is incorrect. My poi...

Steve,I woudl refer you to Nika Aldrich "Digtal Audio for teh Audio Engineer"Quote:Page 353 "A digital recorder will store exactly the same information regardless of how jittery the clock"Therefore according to Nika it makes no difference how many...
Better than my 32" Sony Wega XBR?
I had an XBR 36" HDTV CRT Sony - the only thing that comes close is Panasonic Plasma IMHO...you gain in precision geometry an dbrightness but you still lose a bit in dark scenes. Overall,,,,I think Panasonic Plasma is a slight improvement...LCD .....

Synthfreek - good point - I use that setup but no DAC - my mac mini directly controls ALL sources (including CD player preamp and source selection via an USB to serial link to an infra red controller box)
Best mastered recordings
As for Rick Rubin, I've only heard his work with Johnny Cash on the American label, which is recorded very well. I'm surprised that he doesn't do a good job on other albums he's produced. He likes clipping nearly everything. Producing Metallica wi...
What does Jitter sound like?
Liudas,True. Physically Jitter can ONLY exist once there is some form of clock or timing device...so a CD cannot have any jitter, however, if there is difficulty for a CD player to read a disc then perhaps oscillations in the drive motor power or ...
Size matters...need smaller speakers
I rarely listen above 75db so a speaker's ability to sound its best at low volume is critical for me The world is your oyster.75 db is moderate (only about twice as loud as conversation). I think your current Ushers are way overkill if you listen...

Needless to say, I take much of the claimed auditory observations with a grain of salt. Many theoretical differences that justify large expenditures do not conform with auditory reality. Agree 100%! Large expenditures do NOT conform with auditor...
