Despise conventional dome tweeters
A lot has to do with driver integration. Tweeters are really very simple and very easy and cheap to make and they perform better than every other driver. If you notice the tweeter at all then it is a bad speaker design (very common). A good design...
Best Big Sub? or duals?
Check out HT Shack subwoofer Tests. Look for low group delay, high SPL output (without compression) and low distortion. (If you want audiophile music quality then THD less than 1% is a worthy goal but near impossible to find in most commercial subs)
Bassheads-DSP important????????Velodyne SMS??
Chazz,Musical subs are are about two things. Low Q (look for low group delay) and low distortion. Then it is only about power output - what do you need - decent LF power is very expensive. The HT Shack subwoofer tests is a great resource. You will...
Spooky speakers, buga buga
You are on the right track but you will still get answers all over the map.
why still buy a cd player?
In that case, this leads me to the next question, i.e., how to best compare DACs? Firstly features - do you need remote volume control - do you need USB input - do you want XLR - do you want a high quality finish and faceplate?Since there are man...
Totem Owners....
Nothing wrong with Totem's at all - excellent speakers - but for what you describe Harbeth's would better fit the bill.
JL Audio f112 blown speaker?
Do we even know what excursions were taking place when this distortion was taking place? The HT Shack Subwoofer test graphs are colored with a variety of measurements at various SPL outputs, all at less than insane levels. Many of the curves show...
CD has laid back and uninvolving sound
Shadorne: that is interesting to have both the audiophile vinyl and CD in one package. I listened to Händels Messiah this afternoon (René Jacobs, Harmonia Mundi CD) and I found the midrange not so fleshed out and overall sound also less warm than...
Home theater without center channel? Opinions?
I really wish you wouldnt spread the matching center myth. Well that is what they do in all the mix and mastering studios. They might use a smaller speaker from the same manufacturer for rears but they always use the same across the front. If you...
who makes a decent center channel speaker?
Unfortunately, the construction of the vast majority speakers is faulty BY INTENT as they cater to aesthetics and convenience rather than performance. I quite agree.
why still buy a cd player?
It depends on the DAC being used. Exactly see this and this and this.Decide for yourself if you trust the published results from this manufacturer using Audio Precision test equipment or your ears.If changing the transport makes a difference with...
Buying expensive used CD player/transp = bad idea?
Unlike speakers and amplifiers ...CD audio players have made a fair bit of progress. Anything since the late 90's will tend to be better than vintage gear (in general). I would not recommend buying anything too old for a big price tag unless you j...
Piega P10s.....are they still contenders?
I have owned the P10s for about 10 months now, which is nearing a record for me. Then you haven't found what you are looking for...Perhaps audio bliss will not be found in the next speaker.Perhaps you are looking in the wrong place.Do you know wh...
who makes a decent center channel speaker?
I second Kal - same brand and even better if same type - not always practical though.
JL Audio f112 blown speaker?
JPL,4" is peak to peak - so 2 inch in and 2 inch out. This is the absolute maximum - it would probably sound even more distorted than 10% THD at those type of excursions.
