Pro v Audiophile - Science v Snake Oil?
Snake oil exists in both camps. The big difference is that pro equipment must work day in day out reliably and consistently for many years. Pro often sells by word of mouth. Pros often take demos into the work place to try out before making a comm...
Hihat Question
Folks are missing the point. You need a good tube preamp not a good recording or a treble heavy speaker. All the suggestions here to raise the treble will just ruin the balance of the overall musical presentation. Most hi-hat sound is 2-3KHz - treb...
Preamp Choice... a hard call for me.
You will lose. Go for a C2600 - it has the built in DAC and countless features and will be a significant upgrade with the right tubes.
Speakers with the most detailed midrange? (non-ESL/planar)
@gosta Yes the Excel line is SEAS premium line. It has a copper ring waveguide - so rather unmistakeable. Used in Linkwitz Orion and by Joseph Audio. It is a very expensive unit costing more than most high end speaker woofers/mid range and 5 to 1...
Speakers with the most detailed midrange? (non-ESL/planar)
@woofer72 Not sure what you had in your old SCM 100 - there have been several tweeters over the years. The old Excel millennium tweeter was excellent - one of the best. The older vifa tweeter was sibilant but my quite old pair of SCM 100 may have ...
Hihat Question
You need a great tube preamp with the right tube. Anthem is good but the hihat will be buried in most mixes because most pop/rock producers feel that a hi-hat is an irritant. Jazz, reggae, funk and disco will have more hi-hat because it fits those...
Jimmy Page, It's time to call your lawyers?
Led Zep influences are everywhere. Jack White. Wolfmother. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Rush. Just to name a few others.I think it is wonderful that a new generation of musicians pay homage to these great musicians. After all it is great blues music pla...
Speakers with the most detailed midrange? (non-ESL/planar)
@woofer72 I use ATC EL150A with their P6 amplifier and new ATC built tweeter. I also have the C6 subwoofer which I don’t use for 2 channel stereo (not needed even in a large room). The new ATC tweeter is worth having. Having owned for years the SCM...
Speakers with the most detailed midrange? (non-ESL/planar)
I have heard Harbeth and could easily live with them although I use ATC.Harbeth have a bit of coloration from the cabinet but it is pleasant. They don’t do full orchestral, big band or loud rock with quite the aplomb of ATC. Harbeth are however wo...
So disappointed in today's Americana
@mcondo Check out Curse of Lono!Great stuff from Felix!
Magico A3 vs S3 MKI
If it doesn’t work with R&B then I would re-examine your choice or determine if it was the listening room or something else. A good speaker should work equally brilliantly with absolutely anything - absolutely anything. A speaker that works wi...
Magicos are chesty
@helomech I love the sound of polypropylene cones. My first higher end speaker was Energy Pro 22 with a poly mid-woofer woven onto a rubber surround. That said, my experience is that polypropylene cones almost always sound more rolled off in the 1 ...
All Kit are Band-Aids
I like 440Hz because I am used to it. Any other tuning and I can immediately hear that something is off. Generally lower tuning sounds flat to my ear. That said - some olde classical stuff indeed sounds better tuned at the original 432Hz - gives ev...
Coaxial Ribbon Midrange/tweeter - Can a small midrange ribbon actually do midrange well?
I would be more concerned about ringing. The grill housing of the midrange tweeter system is all metal. This is going to want to vibrate big time. The crossover is around 400Hz so the ribbons are going to have to work hard. Indeed your concern abou...
