Turn table for my kid???
@fastdart69 Well done, perfect choice! If he wants to learn about upgrade path and cheap tweaks etc. have him read the Techiepedia forum on theartofsound British website. A big 1200-loving crowd there with tons of experience. Cheers,Spencer

If the HAP-Z rips SACDs as high rez that would be very big news. My understanding is that Sony has long held a strong position against the idea of ripping SACDs because of their interest in the sale of SACDs with their music biz. For many years th...
Pani ... New ART-9 up and running ...
I posted comparisons vs. Dynavector XX2, but it wasn't mkII, and I didn't say that the ART9 came out ahead. It came out ahead on value for price if that 2x factor or ~$1000 is important in your decision. I found both carts excellent and could live ...
How come only 1 or 2 cartridge makers offer a tune-up after run in?
Sure it's great that Brooks Berdan adjusted the setup after a cart's suspension is broken-in, but isn't that different than what VDH does and actually opening up the cart and adjusting the suspension, rechecking channel balance etc. inside the car...
Best standalone music server?
And when you finish ripping everything look at Goodsync or similar backup management software to make sure you don't lose it all. Physical backups in a different place are a really good idea. Cheers,Spencer
What is the "usual" source of hum between a turntable and phonp-preamp??
"required getting a track force gauge if I decide to change cartridges"If you aren't willing to invest $11 in a digital stylus forge gauge from eBay and set the force correctly (which takes about a minute) then you really shouldn't be listening t...
Best standalone music server?
Maybe your test would be different with FLAC, both should go faster. FYI, flac does much better with metadata than WAV. Cheers,Spencer
Lamm 2.1 amps
How do you know it's time to replace the tubes in a pair of M2.1s? What sonic attributes will I hear when the tubes(i.e. Amperex Bugle Boys) are over the hill. I assume this will be a gradual deterioration...is that correct? Cheers,Spencer

It saves ripped tracks wherever you specify. Could be your iTunes library if you want it to be, but it could be a different folder if you prefer. Cheers,Spencer
Technics SL1200: standard overhang gauge or MintLP
@chakster Good point, azimuth is well worth adjusting in most systems and clearly audible. With some cartridges and tonearms even tiny adjustments yield large improvements.  Other headshells w/adjustable azimuth include the Jelco HS-25 which I rea...

Don't rip with iTunes. Download free XLD for mac. It will get you bit perfect rips into AIFF with greater accuracy than iTunes. Use error correction option. For really scratched discs use 1x or 2x speed; it will usually still work, just a bit slow...

You can read the manuals on vinylengine database. Cheers,Spencer
How much gain is needed in a Phono Preamp for a 0.2 to 0.3mv low output moving coil?
Lots of good suggestions in the last day or two here. I agree with the brief comment that a solid state phono stage will give you a lot higher chance of quick success. It hasn't been discussed much in this thread(but plenty elsewhere!) that low le...
Soekris ApS dac1101 another discrete R2R Multibit dac.
Great, keep the comments coming, @4hannons Cheers,Spencer
Looking for speaker ideas.
Are you really planning on changing preamp and speakers at the same time? That is a road to confusion. If the preamp is sold, but you still have speakers, suggest making the preamp purchase first so you can get a handle on that in your system befor...
